Maize smut caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis is a widespread disease characterized by the development of large plant tumours. U. maydis is a biotrophic pathogen that requires living plant tissue for its development and establishes an intimate interaction zone between fungal hyphae and the plant plasma membrane. U. maydis actively suppresses plant defence responses by secreted protein effectors. Its effector repertoire comprises at least 386 genes mostly encoding proteins of unknown function and expressed exclusively during the biotrophic stage. The U. maydis secretome also contains about 150 proteins with probable roles in fungal nutrition, fungal cell wall modification and host penetration as well as proteins unlikely to act in the fungal-host interface like a chorismate mutase. Chorismate mutases are key enzymes of the shikimate pathway and catalyse the conversion of chorismate to prephenate, the precursor for tyrosine and phenylalanine synthesis. Root-knot nematodes inject a secreted chorismate mutase into plant cells likely to affect development. Here we show that the chorismate mutase Cmu1 secreted by U. maydis is a virulence factor. The enzyme is taken up by plant cells, can spread to neighbouring cells and changes the metabolic status of these cells through metabolic priming. Secreted chorismate mutases are found in many plant-associated microbes and might serve as general tools for host manipulation.

Graphene samples prepared by the exfoliation of graphitic oxide and conversion of nanodiamond exhibit good hydrogen uptake at 1 atm, 77 K, the uptake going up to 1.7 wt %. The hydrogen uptake varies linearly with the surface area, and the extrapolated value of hydrogen uptake by single-layer graphene works out to be just above 3 wt %. The H 2 uptake at 100 atm and 298 K is found to be 3 wt % or more, suggesting thereby the single-layer graphene would exhibit much higher uptakes. Equally interestingly, the graphene samples prepared by us show high uptake of CO 2 , the value reaching up to 35 wt % at 1 atm and 195 K. The firstprinciples calculations show that hydrogen molecules sit alternately in parallel and perpendicular orientation on the six-membered rings of the graphene. Up to 7.7 wt % of hydrogen can be accommodated on singlelayered graphene. CO 2 molecules sit alternatively in a parallel fashion on the rings, giving use to a maximum uptake of 37.93 wt % in single-layer graphene. The presence of more than one layer of graphene in our samples causes a decrease in the H 2 uptake.

Despite the poor screening of the Coulomb potential in organic semiconductors, excitons can dissociate efficiently into free charges at a donor–acceptor heterojunction, leading to application in organic solar cells. A kinetic Monte Carlo model that explains this high efficiency as a two‐step process is presented. Driven by the band offset between donor and acceptor, one of the carriers first hops across the interface, forming a charge transfer (CT) complex. Since the electron and hole forming the CT complex have typically not relaxed within the disorder‐broadened density of states (DOS), their remaining binding energy can be overcome by further relaxation in the DOS. The model only contains parameters that are determined from independent measurements and predicts dissociation yields in excess of 90% for a prototypical heterojunction. Field, temperature, and band offset dependencies are investigated and found to be in agreement with earlier experiments. Whereas the investigated heterojunctions have substantial energy losses associated with the dissociation process, these results suggest that it is possible to reach high dissociation yields at low energy loss.

Sensing characteristics of few-layer graphenes for NO 2 and humidity have been investigated with graphene samples prepared by the thermal exfoliation of graphitic oxide, conversion of nanodiamond (DG) and arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen (HG). The sensitivity for NO 2 is found to be highest with DG. Nitrogen-doped HG (n-type) shows increased sensitivity for NO 2 compared with pure HG. The highest sensitivity for humidity is observed with HG. Sensing characteristics of graphene have been examined for different aliphatic alcohols and the sensitivity is found to vary with the chain length and branching.
