A Three-Dimensional Haptic Matrix Test of Nonverbal Reasoning

Abstract: Three-dimensional haptic matrices were pilot-tested as a nonvisual measure of cognitive ability. The results indicated that they correlated with convergent measures, with emphasis on spatial processing and that the participants who described items “visually” completed them more quickly and accurately and tended to have become visually impaired more recently than the other participants.

“…The setup of the scale makes it possible to be used without any major adjustments with the blind population. According to Miller andSkillman [2003, after Atkins, 2011, p. 7], WAIS is widely used with blind and partially sighted children because of its "flexibility, familiarity, availability, favorable psychometrics and cost effectiveness. " While it is clear that the nonverbal scale is not suitable for the blind, the question whether the verbal scale is enough to measure intelligence in such a population remains unanswered.…”

“…Th e tactile and psychometric tests for the blind have a valid accuracy in relation to this test, e.g. : Th e Perkins-Binet Tests of Intelligence for the Blind [Atkins, 2011], Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, 2 nd Edition (ABAS-II) [Rust & Wallace, 2004], Ohwaki-Kohs Block Design Test [Brand, Pieterse & Frost, 1986], 3-D Haptic Matrix Test of Nonverbal Reasoning [Miller et al, 2007] etc. Studies comparing blind and sighted individuals show non-intergroup diff erences [Vander Kolk, 1982].…”
