“…Bobeck and Fischer (1959) had suggested the propagation of a magnetic domain pattern along the axis of a fine ferromagnetic wire as a way of realising a memory using a stationary magnetic material and a moving magnetic data pattern. Broadbent (1960) took this idea further by considering the possibilities of moving domains around in the plane of a thin ferromagnetic film of a material like permalloy, having an easy direction of magnetisation in the plane of the film. Smith (1961) came up with the idea of using not the domains themselves but the domain walls to represent the binary data, and showed not only how these data could be moved inside a stationary medium but also how logical operations might be implemented.…”
