A teratoma of the lung containing thymic tissue

Abstract: A case of a benign, cystic intrapulmonary teratoma occurring in the left lobe of a 63-yr-old female is described and the typical clinical symptoms and distinguishing X-ray appearances which may be helpful in diagnosing this rare tumour are mentioned. The connection between the tumor and the segmental bronchus clearly established the true intrapulmonary nature of the lesion in this case and the unusual finding of thymic tissue within the wall supports previous speculation regarding the possible thymic origin of… Show more

“…Several possibilities can be assumed for the occurrence of this bronchial connection : (1) biological aggressiveness of the tumor involving the bronchus ; (2) secondary infection of the cystic tumor; (3) digestive enzyme activity inherent to the tumor , particularly which contains pancreatic glands; and (4) combination of these. Our case resembles that of Holt et al (5) . The different linings of the cavity wall and the bronchus and thei r abrupt transition i n our case suggest that the local invasion into the bronchus by the tumor is less likely mechanism for the bronchial connection .…”

“…Li ke teratoma of the mediastinum , intrap 비 monary teratoma is thought to originate from the third pharyngeal pouch which is the anlage of the thymus (5,6) . It has two forms in relation to p 비 monary architecture , parenchymal and endobronchial.…”

“…This incidence contrasts sharply with teratoma arising within the lung, which has been reported only 21 times [ 2 ] . In eight of these cases, the tumor was malignant [3,4].…”
