This survey provides an introduction into eye tracking visualization with an overview of existing techniques. Eye tracking is important for evaluating user behaviour. Analysing eye tracking data is typically done quantitatively, applying statistical methods. However, in recent years, researchers have been increasingly using qualitative and exploratory analysis methods based on visualization techniques. For this state‐of‐the‐art report, we investigated about 110 research papers presenting visualization techniques for eye tracking data. We classified these visualization techniques and identified two main categories: point‐based methods and methods based on areas of interest. Additionally, we conducted an expert review asking leading eye tracking experts how they apply visualization techniques in their analysis of eye tracking data. Based on the experts' feedback, we identified challenges that have to be tackled in the future so that visualizations will become even more widely applied in eye tracking research.

In our experiment, we tested how exposure to a mock televised news segment, with a systematically manipulated emotional valence of voiceover, images and TV tickers (in the updating format) impacts viewers' perception. Subjects (N = 603) watched specially prepared professional video material which portrayed the story of a candidate for local mayor. Following exposure to the video, subjects assessed the politician in terms of competence, sociability, and morality.Results showed that positive images improved the assessment of the politician, whereas negative images lowered it. In addition, unexpectedly, positive tickers led to a negative assessment, and negative ones led to more beneficial assessments. However, in a situation of inconsistency between the voiceover and information provided on visual add-ons, additional elements are apparently ignored, especially when they are negative and the narrative is positive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the curved display on visual performance and user experience. Eye-tracking technique and self-report were adopted to assess the visual performance when watching multimedia on the curved display. For visual examination, two curvatures were chosen: flat and curved with a radius equal to 4200 mm. A series of 12 clips were presented, consisting of 2 visual tasks and 10 multimedia video clips. The result revealed an improved visual performance in the curved display, especially in terms of visual search and attention. Participants showed an active scan of visual information for a particular target among distractors and quickly responded to the visual cues. The study provides guidance for an effective visual communication through a curved display and can help manufacturers understand the strength and weakness of different display forms.
