A technological revolution in data collection

Abstract: Al~lract, The technological development of main frame and mini computers over the last decades has had an enormous impact on social science and market research. These computers allow the analysis of large amounts of data as well as analyses which could not have been done in the past by sorting machines and calculators. The development of micro computers and other electronic technologies will affect data collection in a similar way. It will create new possibilities and will considerably reduce the amount of cost… Show more

“…Even computer aided procedures for self-administered questionnaires (CASAQ) have been developed. For an overview, see Hox, De Bie, and De Leeuw (1990) and Saris (1989). Direct comparisons of computer aided data collection methods (CADAC) are very rare (cf.…”

“…Statistics Sweden and Statistics Netherlands were among the first developers of CAPI. Reviews that also offer some insight in the usage of computer assisted methods in European countries are Hox et al (1990), Martin & Manners (1995), Porst et al (1994), and Saris (1989).…”

“…Saris (1989) reports for a large Dutch panel a mean response of the active panel members of 98% per week and a panel mortality of 15% per year. (However, the initial nonresponse for the panel was ±50%, cf.…”

“…With the advent of audio-CASI (Jobe et al 1994;Johnston and Walton 1995;O'Reilly et al 1994), new attention has been focused on self-administered questionnaires using computers, and video-CASI has been examined relative to audio-CASI. A significant implementation of CASI is the so-called tele-interview in the Netherlands, which involves the placement of computers in the homes of panel respondents for periodic completion of questionnaires by household members (see Saris 1989).…”

“…Self-administration of items by a respondent using the computer as part of a CAPI interview has been referred to by a number of names, including self-administered CAPI (Weeks 1992), video-CASI (to distinguish it from audio-CASI; O'Reilly et al 1994), or CSAQ (computerized self-administered questionnaire; Saris 1991). Despite the many terms used to describe the method, there are relatively few reports of CASI use in surveys of the general population.…”
