A technical note on application of internally finned tubes in solar parabolic trough absorber pipes

Abstract: The heterogeneous incoming heat flux in solar parabolic trough absorber tubes generates huge temperature difference in each pipe section. Helical internal fins can reduce this effect, homogenising the temperature profile and reducing thermal stress with the drawback of increasing pressure drop. Another effect is the decreasing of the outer surface temperature and thermal losses, improving the thermal efficiency of the collector. The application of internal finned tubes for the design of parabolic trough collec… Show more

“…17 Furthermore, the use of various flow-inserts as conical nozzles, conical-rings, V-nozzles, and screw-tapes has also been examined in other literature. 18,19 Munoz and Abanades 20 proved that the use of internal fins in the PTC absorber increases its thermal performance up to 2% when it is operating with Syltherm 800. Wang et al 21 proved that the use of dimples in the PTC absorber leads to Nusselt enhancement up to 23% when the collector operates with air.…”

“…Moreover, the use of various inserts in the flow as conical nozzles, conical rings, V-nozzles and screw-tapes [18,19] are usually found in the literature. Munoz and Abanades with an interesting study [20] proved that the use of internal fins in the PTC is able to enhance the useful output approximately 2%; an interesting enhancement with importance in application as the electricity production.…”

“…Conducting a multi-objective evaluation method, they found the best design to be with three fins in the down part of the absorber. Furthermore, the use of helical fins has been studied by Munoz and Abanades [42,43].…”
