A Taxonomy for Three-Terminal Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract: Tandem and multijunction solar cells offer the only demonstrated path to terrestrial 1-sun solar cell efficiency over 30%. Three-terminal tandem (3TT) solar cells can overcome some of the limitations of two-terminal and four-terminal tandem solar cell designs. However, the coupled nature of the cells adds a degree of complexity to the devices themselves and the ways that their performance can be measured and reported. While many different configurations of 3TT devices have been proposed, there is no standard t… Show more

“…To characterize the operation of a three-terminal solar cell under AM1.5G illumination it is useful to measure J on each junction as a function of both voltages, V top and V bot , and plot J and output power (P) maps as the ones shown in Figure 3a. Such plots help identify the possible interaction between subcells; 17,23,39 a detailed description of how to interpret them is given in Warren et al 35 . In such graphs, negligible cross-talk between cells results in J top and P top being invariant with respect to V bot , i.e.…”

“…This can be avoided in future prototypes by inverting the growth and contacting the base from below with interdigitated base and collector contacts. 34 Following the recently proposed taxonomy for three-terminal tandem solar cells, 35 this cell is denoted GaInP/r/GaAs(p/n). The cell has a MgF 2 /ZnS anti-re ection coating (ARC) deposited by e-beam evaporation.…”

“…The polarity and illumination direction are just part of what differentiates the myriad tandem device architectures, all of which have certain benefits and drawbacks in terms of fabrication challenges, efficiencies and potential for commercialization. [ 75 ] Each choice made about the type of tandem to fabricate will necessarily limit choices for which perovskite active layer and contact layers (CLs) that can be used because of processing incompatibilities or other issues with materials integration. Many of these issues stem from the fact that all‐perovskite tandems have a unique fabrication challenge as compared to other perovskite‐containing tandems.…”

“…The intermediate is the less commonly known three‐terminal (3T) tandem which can be made from an interdigitated back contact (IBC) rear sub‐cell and a wide‐ E g front sub‐cell, connected monolithically through a recombination junction (Figure 2B). [ 75,79,80 ] If a monolithic IBC 3T tandem configuration is considered, it typically must be illuminated in substrate due to the opacity of the IBC contacts that have to be patterned first on the substrate. [ 79 ] This configuration has the advantage of combining the optical coupling and lower parasitic absorption losses of a 2‐terminal monolithic tandem with the wider available bandgap range and lower spectral dependency of a 4‐terminal tandem.…”
