In this study, we take the Onthophagus chevrolati species group, likely a monophyletic species group as an example to analyze the processes that led to the biogeographic integration of the Holarctic fauna in the mountains of the Mexican Transition Zone to test our biogeographic hypotheses. We propose a change from the status of subspecies to species for O. oaxacanus Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. howdeni Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. jaliscensis Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. longecarinatus Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. omiltemius Bates, 1889 revised status; and O. retusus Harold, 1869 revised status. Consequently, the O. chevrolati group of species is currently made up of 47 species belonging to four species lines: O. vespertilio, O. hippopotamus, O. cyanellus and O. chevrolati. The diversification of the Onthophagus chevrolati species group in this region resulted from three hypothetical stages of evolution. In the first, the penetration and expansion of the ancestor of the O. chevrolati species group occurred before the Miocene and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt arose. During the second stage, the O. hippopotamus species line expanded and evolved, integrating with the paleogeographic changes and the formation of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, as a consequence of volcanism during the Miocene-Pliocene. In the third and most recent stage, the O. chevrolati species line used the existing mountain systems and interglacial climate fluctuations of the Pleistocene to expand and diversify. Thus, the mountains of the Mexican Transition Zone are not simply periglacial refugia. The entomofauna of Holarctic origin present in the region evolved while the Earth’s geological processes were underway.

Con base en colectas, registros en la bibliografía y revisión de material depositado en colecciones entomoló-gicas se realiza una actualización a la lista de coleópteros de la región Piura en Perú, añadiendo nuevas especies y nuevos datos distribucionales. Se adicionan 72 especies, 52 géneros y 5 familias, con lo cual la cantidad de coleópteros para la región se eleva a 317 especies, 255 géneros y 38 familias, mientras que para 13 especies ya conocidas se reportan nuevos datos provinciales ampliando su distribución dentro de la región. Ahasverus advena (Waltl, 1834), Alaetrinus pullus (Sahlberg, 1823), Taeniotes marmoratus Thomson, 1865 y el género Coscinoptera Lacordaire, 1848 se citan por primera vez para Perú, mientras que Pagiocerus frontalis (Fabricius, 1801), Scymnobius ecuadoricus Gordon & González, 2005 y Rodolia cardinalis (Mulsant, 1850) son nuevas citas para la región Piura. Las especies consideradas en esta actualización se presentan a modo de listado fau-nístico comentado y se incluye lista actualizada de todos los coleópteros conocidos hasta el momento para la región con distribución por provincia y paisaje ecológico.

The Ecuadorian territory is divided into four natural regions: the coastal lowlands, the Andean highlands, the Amazon basin, and the Galapagos Islands. Each of these regions has its own ecosystems and specific vegetation. The purpose of this work is to compile an updated catalog of the Scarabaeinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) of Ecuador that includes distributional data and several nomenclatural acts. We compiled data from 25 scientific collections, with the examination of 13,550 scarabaeines; additionally, 390 bibliographic references were reviewed for their taxonomic histories. The Scarabaeinae fauna from Ecuador is represented by 33 genera and 223 species, with 45 range-restricted species; 27 species were erroneously recorded from the country. The following nomenclatural acts are made: (A) two new status as valid species: Canthon (Glaphyrocanthon) ohausi Balthasar, 1939,stat. n., and Deltochilum (Calhyboma) arrowi Paulian, 1939stat. n.; (B) one new synonym:UroxysmagnusBalthasar, 1940 =UroxyslatesulcatusBates, 1891,syn. n.; (C) two revalidated names: Canthidium (Canthidium) orbiculatum (Lucas, 1857) and Dichotomius (Luederwaldtinia) fortepunctatus (Luederwaldt, 1923); and (D) ten lectotypes designated for:ChoeridiumorbiculatumLucas, 1857;ChoeridiumcupreumBlanchard, 1846;CanthidiumcoerulescensBalthasar, 1939;CanthonangustatusHarold, 1867;CanthonangustatusohausiBalthasar, 1939;DeltochilumtessellatumBates, 1870;PinotusfortepunctatusLuederwaldt, 1923;PinotusglobulusFelsche, 1901;UroxyslatesulcatusBates, 1891; andUroxysmagnusBalthasar, 1940.
