A tactical periodisation model for Gaelic football

Abstract: Tactical Periodisation is a training methodology, originally developed for soccer, that focuses primarily on the systems of play that a team intends to use in competition. It has been popularised by successful European coaches and subsequently has been proposed as a model to follow for other sports such as rugby union and tennis in more recent times. Gaelic football is an amateur sport that has similarities to soccer and rugby union. To date no training periodisation model has been proposed for Gaelic football… Show more

“…In elite female soccer, small-sided games elicited a higher HR response (> 85 HR max ) when compared to medium-and large-conditioned games [39]. This information could be used by Gaelic game practitioners to manipulate the constraints within a modified game to elicit a specific physiological adaptation whilst continually developing the technical and tactical elements of the game [41]. It has previously been shown in elite female soccer players the average HR during competitive games ranged between 152 and 186 b min −1 , the equivalent ~ 80 and 90% of HR peak [35,38], with no differences across positions.…”

“…A welldeveloped aerobic performance capacity can enable female team sport players to maintain higher performance levels in games (79). It is important that practitioners incorporate physical, technical, and tactical subprinciples to maximize training time availability, especially in an amateur LGF setting (99). The utilization of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become a popular training modality to effectively condition female team sport athletes (15,16).…”

“…Game-based training (GBT or SSGs) (Table 3) has gained popularity as a conditioning modality in male Gaelic football (97,100). GBT can enable LGF S&C practitioners to develop physical, technical, and tactical aspect capabilities in a time-efficient manner (99). During this type of conditioning modality, the intensity can be manipulated in many ways, including varying exercise type (tactical constraints, number of players, and specific conditions), field dimensions, and manipulation of time constraints (25).…”

“…La definición y descripción de conceptos es uno de los matices más relevantes en el desarrollo del diseño y análisis de MdJ. El aspecto más importante es definir un conjunto de principios para definir el comportamiento y proporcionar organización al equipo (Mangan et al, 2021). La claridad de la información también juega un papel relacionado, según Jankowski (2016), cuanto más refinado es el MdJ y mejor se presenta a los jugadores, más claras son las diferentes acciones que deben tomarse.…”
