A Systematic Study of Estimating Potato N Concentrations Using UAV-Based Hyper- and Multi-Spectral Imagery

Abstract: Potato growth depends largely on nitrogen (N) availability in the soil. However, the shallow-root crop coupled with its common cultivation in coarse-textured soils leads to its poor N use efficiency. Fast and accurate estimations of potato tissue N concentrations are urgently needed to assist the decision making in precision fertilization management. Remote sensing has been utilized to evaluate the potato N status by correlating spectral information with lab tests on leaf N concentrations. In this study, a sys… Show more

“…Additionally, different manufacturers may offer cameras with varying price points within entry-level, mid-range and high-end models. For example, studies report prices for MS commercial cameras and RGB cameras of approximately $3500 USD [22] and less than $1100 USD [23], respectively.…”

“…The results indicate that the partial least squares regression model built from full-band spectral information demonstrates strong performance. Zhou [27] evaluated the effectiveness of hyperspectral and multispectral images in estimating potato CNC and found that the use of hyperspectral images yielded superior results to multispectral images, with the visible (400-700 nm) band demonstrating the highest correlation with potato CNC. Li [28] developed a model for estimating potato chlorophyll content by utilizing hyperspectral images of the potato canopy.…”
