A systematic review of the survival and complication rates of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) after an observation period of at least 5 years

Abstract: The present study was done to determine the long-term success and survival of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) and to evaluate the risks for failures due to specific biological and technical complications. A MEDLINE search (PubMed) from 1966 up to March 2004 was conducted, as well as hand searching of bibliographies from relevant articles. Nineteen studies from an initial yield of 3658 titles were finally selected and data were extracted independently by three reviewers. Prospective and retrospective cohort studi… Show more

“…Whereas for implant-supported reconstructions, systematic reviews provide very recent evidence comparing metal-and allceramic reconstructions [3,4], a systematic pooling of newer clinical data on tooth-supported reconstructions is limited to all-ceramic reconstructions [5]. Traditionally, metal-based reconstructions for fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) were considered as the gold standard [6]. Alloys, mainly gold-based, were fully or partially veneered with feldspathic ceramics.…”

“…1 The use of dental implants avoids the biological complications of, for example, preparing adjacent teeth as bridge abutments. 2,3 Some studies have demonstrated that the occurrence of pulpal necrosis following preparation of abutment teeth for fi xed bridgework can be as high as 30% at ten years. 3 As a result implantology is seen as an increasingly contemporary, integral and important component of the practice of dentistry within the UK.…”

“…This systematic review is the final one following three other reviews [1][2][3] by the same group looking at the survival and complication rates of different designs of FPD. The title of the series is slightly misleading in suggesting that the data reflect a minimum of 5 years of observation, whereas the inclusion criteria for study selection in fact required a mean follow-up time of 5 years or more.…”
