A systematic review of reliable and valid tools for the measurement of patient participation in healthcare

Abstract: Few reliable and valid tools for measurement of patient participation in healthcare have been recently developed. Of those reported in this review, the dyadic Observing Patient Involvement in Decision Making (dyadic-OPTION) tool presents the most promise for measuring core components of patient participation. There remains a need for further study into valid, reliable and feasible strategies for measuring patient participation as part of continuous quality improvement.

“…A number of studies have shown that user involvement has potential benefits in changing health-related behaviours, empowering citizens to take greater responsibility for their own health, controlling health costs, improving the quality of health care provision and increasing patients’ satisfaction and adherence to treatment (Angel & Frederiksen, 2015; Castro, Van Regenmortel, Vanhaecht, Sermeus, & Van Hecke, 2016; Phillips, Street, & Haesler, 2016; Williamson, 2014). Service user involvement encompasses involvement at an individual level, such as in decision-making regarding individual treatment, or at an organizational level in the development of health care services and policy (Rise & Steinsbekk, 2016; Snyder & Engström, 2016; Tritter, 2009).…”

“…However, we highlight that the conceptual approach to patient participation in our systematic review was reflective of the broad nature of patient participation. As stated in the background,2 the terms ‘patient participation’ and ‘patient centredness’ are often used synonymously. There are a number of concepts that inform patient participation/patient-centeredness.…”
