A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis to Assess Patient‐Reported Outcomes after Lung Cancer Surgery

Abstract: The main objective of this review was to systematically review, assess, and report on the studies that have assessed health related quality of life (HRQOL) after VATS and thoracotomy for resection of lung cancer. We performed a systematic review of six databases. The Downs and Black tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Five studies were included. In general, patients undergoing VATS have a better HRQOL when compared to thoracotomy; however, there was a high risk of bias in the included studies. The consis… Show more

“…Furthermore, the treatment patterns were different between SCLC and NSCLC patients, especially the chemotherapy (Kuwabara et al 2009), as well as molecular targeted therapy (Lauro et al 2014;Asai et al 2014). The most effective treatment for early NSCLC is surgical resection (Gazala et al 2013). However, nearly 2/3 of patients with NSCLC are diagnosed at an advanced or metastatic stage of disease.…”

“…In China, lung cancer is the first leading cause of death from all cancers (Chen et al,additional therapy. However, the specific markers have not been achievable (Chen et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2013a;2013b;2013c;Gazala et al, 2013;Granger et al, 2013). Therefore, the research for effective molecular markers for diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer is an important issue at present.…”

“…The VATS lobectomy resulted in a lower total complication rate (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.24-0.84; p = 0.013) compared to the open lobectomy based on the data including a total of 23 studies [24]. Based on a systemic review and meta-analysis of the assessment of PROs after the lung cancer surgery [25], patients undergoing VATS have a better HR-QOL when compared to patients who receiving the thoracotomy. The consistent use of a lung cancer specific questionnaire for measuring the HR-QOL after surgery was reported to be encouraging [25].…”
