Most small and medium-sized enterprises in the furniture industry use simple partial approaches to improve or manage production processes. The article aims to present research results focused on continuous process improvement through the implementation of Six Sigma (SS) and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) concepts in furniture production. Their impact on the performance via the level of the ROE (Return on Equity) indicator was evaluated using statistical methods of Chi-square test and Cramer's contingency coefficient. The results of the research showed that furniture enterprises that had implemented selected methods of quality management reached a medium level of ROE values. The absence of a more comprehensive approach to managing the performance of processes was the impulse for a model creation based on the interconnection of SS and LSS concepts. The model should a practical use of appropriate methodologies and procedures in the management of furniture production processes, as well as in their optimisation. A thorough analysis of nonconforming products performed in furniture manufacturing processes transformed into SS and LSS metrics and the implementation of the model in the enterprise led to reduced process waste by reducing the number of non-conforming products, reducing the cost of such products, and increasing the capability of critical processes. Implications for Central European audience:The combination of theoretical knowledge in performance management and quality of production processes and practical knowledge from the real implementation of methods and tools for continuous improvement of production process capability in the company proved to be a good basis for creating a model within SS and LSS. These facts have contributed to the development of scientific knowledge. The presented application of methods and tools within SS and LSS will provide instructions for the use of new management methods. The specific outputs of the research work improve defining problems, measuring process parameters, analysis of measured data, improving furniture production processes.

This paper presents a continuous improvement (CI) project based on the application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology. This project was carried out at coffee manufacturing industry located in northern area of Malaysia. The focus of this presented CI project is to improve the weight inconsistency problem of coffee powder packaging. The presented CI project was mainly guided with Six Sigma methodology of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) steps, and related Lean tools applications. The step of Define summaries the overall view of CI project. In the step of Measure, current level of sigma based on defect per million of opportunities (DPMO) calculation was determined. Initially, 6% of rejected products were recorded, which it presents the sigma level at 3.1. In the step of Analyze, a series of team-based activities towards root cause identification was carried out. It included the applications of cause effect (CE) analysis and possible causes prioritization and close observations on packaging process. In the step of Improve, the related Lean tool was proposed to improve the problem under study. In the final step of Control, related supportive actions were suggested to sustain the effectiveness of the proposed solution. There are fourteen possible causes are initially identified in CE analysis and based on team’s evaluation process of possible causes prioritization four causes are collectively to be the most possible of root cause(s). Three close observation sessions were carried out to finalize the most possible root cause of the problem. Result strongly suggested that the high variation of coffee powder’s size and inconsistency is the root cause. An improvement strategy based on Lean Manufacturing approach called ‘poka yoke’ is proposed. The proposed improvement strategy was then validated based on real packaging process scenario. Result shows that the proposed improvement strategy is significantly effective to solve the problem with 0% of reject product was recorded so far, where it is not only produced the product within the acceptable weight of 215 and 208 grams, but also presents the reduction of weight fluctuation that close to ideal weight of 208 grams.

This paper explores the impact of digital technologies on the nature and routine intensity of shopfloor work, the ways in which digital technologies exert their effects and the factors moderating the outcomes of digitalisation in respect of work.The effect of technology cannot be limited to a dichotomy of increasing versus decreasing degrees of routine. Instead, there are basic scenarios as far as the routine content of activities is concerned: a) no change in routine; b) increased routine; c) transformed routine; d) reduced routine.More specifically, drawing on data from Hungarian companies, we discuss the multiple ways that technology affects the nature and routineness of work. These include (i) workload and intensity of work; (ii) the degree to which tasks can be explicitly defined, measured and codified; (iii) task spectrum, i.e. the variability, complexity and diversity of work tasks; (iv) the composition and amount of skills required for task execution; (v) the importance of experience or tacit knowledge for task execution; and (vi) the value added of work tasks.Evidence indicates that the qualitative enrichment of shopfloor work and digital technology-induced reduction in the routine content of job tasks apply only to relatively skilled employees, albeit not exclusively in high-level shopfloor functions. It is argued that the beneficial effects of digital technologies materialise only if employees are skilled enough to be upskilled and become engaged not only in digitally-assisted but also in digitally-augmented, high-value activities.Finally, positive developments in the nature of work require that employees' work tasks be reorganised, work design and work practices modified and employees upskilled: thus, they are contingent on conscious organisational and human resources management.Without these intentional managerial interventions, digital technology implementation entails deskilling and/or technological unemployment rather than providing richer dimensions to shopfloor work.
