A systematic literature review of schistosomiasis in urban and peri-urban settings

Abstract: Background Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by trematode worms of the genus Schistosoma and belongs to the neglected tropical diseases. The disease has been reported in 78 countries, with around 290.8 million people in need of treatment in 2018. Schistosomiasis is predominantly considered a rural disease with a subsequent focus of research and control activities in rural settings. “…Schistosomiasis persists throughout the world and is now spreading from rural to urban areas despite control efforts, including successful treatment using the drug praziquantel 6 , 19 . Methods to detect the sources of recurring infections and the spread of new infections are of paramount importance, and genetic analysis has become prominent in the epidemiological toolbox 9 .…”

“…Soil-transmitted intestinal nematodes such as hookworms ( Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus ), Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides infect over two billion people worldwide [ 13 ] while flatworms like Schistosoma spp. cause ~200 million infections per year [ 14 ]. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs are essential not only for the development of parasites within their hosts but for regulation of the complex interactions between them [ 15 17 ].…”
