A swamp of non-SUSY vacua

Abstract: Abstract:We consider known examples of non-supersymmetric AdS 7 and AdS 4 solutions arising from compactifications of massive type IIA supergravity and study their stability, taking into account the coupling between closed-and open-string sector excitations. Generically, open strings are found to develop modes with masses below the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound. We comment on the relation with the Weak Gravity Conjecture, and how this analysis may play an important role in examining the validity of non-sup… Show more

“…Further, we make an ansatz h i (r, z) = z n−2 f i (rz), where rz is the proper radius. 12 Making a gauge choice that the perturbation is traceless (h ab η ab = 0) gives the following linearized Einstein's equation for f t (rz) 1 + k 2 z 2 r 2 f t (zr) + 2 zr + (2n + 1) k 2 zr f t (zr) + (n 2 − 4)k 2 f t (zr) = 0, (3.27) where as usual, primes denote derivatives with respect to the argument. In terms of f t , the radial part f r is given by a remarkably simple first order equation The first solution f (1) t (zr) gives a perturbation χ tt = z 2 h t = z 3 f t = z 2 /r, while the second solution gives a perturbation which has the following asymptotics lim r 1…”

“…contrary to the perturbation considered in (3.1) 12. Choosing hi(r, z) = z n−2 fi(rz) makes the perturbation to the AdS metric χ ab ∼ z n fi(rz) after including the z 2 factor in front of the four dimensional part of the metric.…”

“…We know that these exist, since one exists already in the minimal theory with no vectors [31]; given the universal lift of [12], in fact we even know that every supersymmetric solution has a non-supersymmetric twin. These were given a CFT interpretation in [32], but were later found to be unstable within the larger theory with abelian vectors [15] (which should represent transverse D6-brane motions rather than the Myers effect described in this paper). Given this instability, we have not analyzed such vacua.…”
