Tourism, a socioeconomic activity generally defined as an exchange of culture, is diversified by its different purposes. Ecotourism, which emerged and has been constantly developing in the last quarter century, is based on the principles of protecting the natural environment and recognising the original local culture in an interaction with the environment. As significant components of tourism activities, accommodation structures play a major role in the realisation of ecotourism. Due to its location, cultural heritage and rich history together with its Mediterranean climate, Cyprus is an especially important tourism destination for people from Middle East and European countries. The traditional living culture in this small island country has created a huge demand for ecotourism in Cyprus. The ecotourism industry in Cyprus provides housing structures restored with the traditional architectural characteristics of the island as well as new buildings. The new accommodation structures should be constructed in compliance with the traditional architectural characteristics of Cyprus to contribute to the island’s cultural tourism. Our study was conducted through a literature review regarding the main concepts of tourism and ecotourism and on-site field work on the architectural characteristics of existing ecotourism accommodation structures located in the ecotourism villages of Cyprus. In consideration of the field study findings, this study also proposes recommendations that could be a model for the architectural characteristics of new accommodation structures to be constructed for sustainable ecotourism in Cyprus. Within the framework of our study, the location, construction date, and architectural characteristics of fifteen accommodation structures were selected from Cyprus ecotourism villages; their layout and sketch drawings were completed using measurements and observations, while outdoor-indoor photographs were taken. As a result of these findings and based on the common architectural characteristics of existing ecotourism accommodation structures, the architectural characteristics of future accommodation structures have been identified accordingly.

Utopias are imaginary depictions written in order to establish the ideal order that criticizes the deficiencies of current administration and society and is influenced by various periodic events and thoughts. In the 20th century, due to rapid urbanization and population growth, the environmental problems have been brought to a global scale and the irreversible destruction of nature has made ecological design a subject of utopias in the future. The concept of ecotopia was first used by Ernest Callenbach in his work "Ecotopia" published in 1975. The ecological design criteria in this work have formed the basis of ecotopia designs. While literary ecological utopias written in the 20th century can be defined as ecotopia by conforming to the design criteria of ecotopia, architectural ecological utopias designed in the 20th and 21st century cannot be defined as ecological although they have ecological characteristics or are completely ecological. Therefore, the research asked "Today's real ecotopia ecovillages are sturdy?" In the study, firstly, the design criteria of the concept of ecotopia were obtained by discourse analysis method on Ernest Callenabach's "Ekotopia", the past literary utopia works and their intertextual contexts were extracted, and then the design criteria of 6 selected ecovillages were reflected. When the current place of the concept of ecotopia and the findings of the study are examined, it has been observed that it is no longer imaginary design and has an applicable quality, and it is revealed that ecotopias come to life with ecovillage examples.

In Northern Cyprus, where there is a great potential for cultural tourism, transforming cultural heritage into digital heritage and preserving it, and making it sustainable by conveying it to future generations, are of great importance for the economic development of the island. For the said transformation to be carried out more sustainably and to contribute to cultural tourism, both the knowledge and opinions of those working in the field of tourism and the expectations of the tourists visiting the island are important. In this context, data were collected from both sides through the questions prepared by the researchers. In the collection of data, a semi-structured interview form consisting of nine open-ended questions for tourism professionals and seven open-ended questions for tourists visiting the island was used, four of which were common. The opinions of two experts were taken in the preparation of the interview form, which was created using the existing literature. In the analysis of the obtained data, descriptive analysis was used, while descriptive statistics were employed to quantify the collected data. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that there are important deficiencies in terms of technology, internet, and management when transferring cultural elements to digital media in Northern Cyprus and that the technological infrastructure should be developed first. In addition to the development of technology, organization, planning, and forming legal regulations at the ministerial level is also important. It was also determined in the study that tourists did not want to start and finish their touristic activities in the digital environment in a general sense.
