Aim:To determine the current trends in technological armamentarium and endodontic treatment among Brazilian endodontists. Methods: A total of 279 endodontists answered a web-based survey questionnaire about their region of activity in Brazil and years as a specialist, average number of endodontic cases treated per month, number of visits to complete the treatment, use of rubber dam for isolation, type of irrigant, obturation technique and device used for this purpose, temporary filling materials, and greater difficulty encountered during treatment and technological armamentarium. A descriptive analysis, expressed in terms of frequency and percentage, was performed and the data were correlated using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: Most of the respondents had up to 10 years as specialists. More than 50% of endodontists preferred to complete the endodontic treatment in a single visit. Ninety-nine percent of endodontists used rubber dam for isolation. NaOCl was the most widely used irrigant. Most of the respondents associated different techniques for root canal filling. Lateral condensation and Continuous wave of condensation were the isolated technique most reported. Filling devices (thermocompactors) were used by 53% of endodontists. Glass ionomer was the preferred temporary filling material. The answers for the use of technological armamentarium revealing that 94% of endodontists used an apex locator; 67.38% utilized magnification (loupe: 23.66%; microscope: 35.48%; microscope and loupe: 8.24%); 58% reported to digital radiography; and 47.31% used computed tomography as a complementary tool. About mechanized instrumentation, 44.44% endodontists employed rotary and reciprocating files. The difficulties encountered during endodontic treatment were classified as preparation > access > obturation > anesthesia > isolation. Conclusions: Most endodontists have implemented new technologies, such as mechanical instrumentation, apex locators, magnification, digital radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound, and obturation tools, in their clinical practice.

BackgroundThe prevalence of apical periodontitis in diabetes mellitus patients is high. The altered immunity in diabetes affects the healing process of periapical tissue. Single visit endodontic treatment has shown to increase the periapical healing rate with better patient compliance. Hence the present study aims at evaluating the clinical and radiographic healing outcome of single visit endodontic treatment, in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with periapical disease.Material and MethodsEighty patients with periapical disease were divided into 2 groups of 40 each: Group I, Control subjects and Group II, Type 2 diabetics. Glycosylated hemoglobin levels were assessed preoperatively and at follow up intervals in diabetics. Pre-operative assessment of periapical status was done using CPDR (Clinical periapical diagnosis of root), QLDR (Qualitative radiographic diagnosis of tooth) and QTDR (Quantitative radiographic diagnosis of tooth) criteria. Postoperative healing was evaluated following single-visit endodontic treatment by Strindberg criteria.ResultsGroup 2 subjects had chronic and exacerbating lesions with significantly larger lesions (p=0.029). 100 % clinical healing outcome in diabetic group was seen in two months. Group 2 showed 85% success in one year on radiographic evaluation. Poor controlled diabetics showed failure compared to fair and good controlled.ConclusionsType 2 diabetics had chronic and larger sized lesions when compared to control subjects. The periapical lesions in patients with poor diabetic control showed failure. The clinical and radiographic healing outcome of single visit endodontic therapy was delayed in diabetic patients. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of knowledge of dentists working in Gaziantep about the stages of root canal treatment. Questionnaires were reached to 118 general dental practitioners working in Gaziantep. Questionnaire was including questions such as age, gender, year of graduation, root canal medicament, root canal sealer, irrigation solution, use of rotary instrument and apex locator, number of sessions, indication of retreatment. Results were analyzed with chi-square test. A hundred of the dentists accepted to be included in the survey. The most frequently preferential inter-appointment medicament was calcium hydroxide with a ratio of 84 % (p < 0,05). Resin based sealers are the mostly used sealers (p < 0,05) while endomethazone and zinc oxide eugenol based sealers (ZOE) are used less frequently. Composite is preferred by 71 % of respondents for coronal restoration (p < 0,05) while amalgam is the second most used material with the ratio of 41 %. Single visit treatment is carried out especially by 15-20 and 0-5 years graduate to single-double rooted teeth. For working length determination, 64 % of respondents prefer radiographic method, 32 % of them use apex locators while 42 % rely upon tactile sensation. Among the respondents, 41% use only hand files for preparation while % 59 use rotary instruments. Sodium hypochlorite is the most used irrigant while chlorhexidine is used less. General dental practitioners in Gaziantep should obviate the information deficiencies about different steps of endodontics.
