A survey of software learnability

Abstract: It is well-accepted that learnability is an important aspect of usability, yet there is little agreement as to how learnability should be defined, measured, and evaluated. In this paper, we present a survey of the previous definitions, metrics, and evaluation methodologies which have been used for software learnability. Our survey of evaluation methodologies leads us to a new question-suggestion protocol, which, in a user study, was shown to expose a significantly higher number of learnability issues in compar… Show more

“…Given that the concept of learnability has several acceptations, we have used some ideas from the framework presented in [18]. The first main idea is that learnability depends on users' experience.…”

“…Learnability is consistently identified as a critical component of usability [13,31,37], but as Grossman et al [18] observe, there is little agreement over how it can be defined or measured. Grossman et al [18] provide a comprehensive review of definitions, metrics, and methodologies for assessing learnability, and they suggest a new protocol for measuring it.…”

“…Grossman et al [18] provide a comprehensive review of definitions, metrics, and methodologies for assessing learnability, and they suggest a new protocol for measuring it. However, evaluation methodologies are applied after an interface has been designed, and current best-practice guidelines for supporting expertise are often high level generalisations, such as "provide shortcuts" [31] that provide little direct guidance or insight into underlying design issues.…”
