Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emergent architecture where cloud computing services are extended to the edge of networks into the mobile base stations. As a promising edge technology, it can be applied to mobile, wireless and wireline scenarios, using software and hardware platforms, located at the network edge in the vicinity of end users. MEC provides seamless integration of multiple application service providers and vendors towards mobile subscribers, enterprises and other vertical segments. It is an important component in the proposed 5G architecture that supports variety of innovative applications and services where ultra low latency is required. However, there are some challenges exists in the MEC eco system. To address these challenges, first off need to understand the network infrastructure of MEC, cloud and cellular network.Some questions and problems are addressed in this thesis that outlines the importance and challenges of MEC deployment. Impact of MEC integration with the traditional mobile and cloud network appears in this paper. A survey has been presented that contributes in general understanding of mobile edge computing (MEC). Readers will have an overview of MEC, such as definition, advantages, architectures and applications. Moreover, related research and future directions are pointed out in this thesis. Finally, security and privacy issues and their possible solutions are also discussed.iii This thesis is dedicated to my late Parents who were my first teachers. Without their support, guidance, and infinite wisdom, I would not have made it this far. Mobile edge computing is becoming a promising computing architecture to overcome the resource limitation of mobile devices and bandwidth bottleneck of the core networks in mobile cloud computing. Although offloading applications to the cloud can extend the performance for the mobile devices, it may also lead to greater processing latency. Usually, the mobile users have to pay for the cloudlet resource or cloud resource they used. In this paper, we bring a thorough study on the energy consumption, time consumption, and cost of using the resource of cloudlet and cloud for workflow applications in mobile edge computing. Based on theoretical analysis, a multi-objective optimization model is established. In addition, a corresponding multi-objective computation offloading method based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II is proposed to find the optimal offloading strategy for all the workflow applications. Finally, extensive experimental evaluations are performed to show that our proposed method is effective and energy-and cost-aware for workflow applications in MEC.

Summary The evolutionary advancements in the field of technology have led to the instigation of cloud computing. The Internet of Things paradigm stimulated the extensive use of sensors distributed across the network edges. The cloud datacenters are assigned the responsibility for processing the collected sensor data. Recently, fog computing was conceptuated as a solution for the overwhelmed narrow bandwidth. The fog acts as a complementary layer that interplays with the cloud and edge computing layers, for processing the data streams. The fog paradigm, as any distributed paradigm, has its set of inherent challenges. The fog environment necessitates the development of management platforms that effectuates the orchestration of fog entities. Owing to the plenitude of research efforts directed toward these issues in a relatively young field, there is a need to organize the different research works. In this study, we provide a compendious review of the research approaches in the domain, with special emphasis on the approaches for orchestration and propose a multilevel taxonomy to classify the existing research. The study also highlights the application realms of fog computing and delineates the open research challenges in the domain.
