A Survey of British Sheep Blowflies

Abstract: i. A four-year survey, involving the investigation of over 1,000 cases of strike, has been made of the species concerned in sheep myiasis throughout the British Isles. In all regions, L. sericata is the principal maggot-fly. In Scotland, Northern England and North Wales, L. caesar is an important species. Phormia terraenovae has much the same distribution, as a striking species, as L. caesar, except that it apparently does not strike sheep in North Wales ; in the areas where it occurs it follows L. caesar in i… Show more

“…The greenbottle, Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is an important ectoparasite of sheep, causing significant economic and welfare problems in many parts of northern Europe (MacLeod, 1943;Wall et al, 1992a). The feeding activity of the fly larvae causes extensive tissue damage and the resulting lesion may attract further oviposition.…”

“…Although this study demonstrated that Lucilia sericafa was the most common species involved in sheep strike in Scotland, and L.sericata was absent from 5% (MacLeod, 1943a). More recently, Wall et al (1992) confirmed the importance of Lsen'cata in strike cases in England and Wales, finding, in a study of thirty-two larval samples, that 19% contained alternative species (all Lzaesar), and 6% contained Lxaesar alone.…”

“…MacLeod (1943a) found that Lsericata was present in almost all cases sampled in central and southern England and South Wales, and alternative species were present in only 2% of these samples. In North Wales, the Pennines and Yorkshire, 15% of samples contained alternative species,…”

“…Number of Strikes L. sericata is the principal sheep blowfly of the British Isles (Davies 1934;Macleod 1943;Ratcliffe 1934) and is one of the two important sheep blowflies of New Zealand (Miller 1939). Blowfly strike of sheep by L. sericata occurs also in South Africa (Hepburn 1943) and in U.S.A. (Bishopp 1915), but this species is not a serious pest in either country.…”
