A Survey of Applications With Combined BIM and 3D Laser Scanning in the Life Cycle of Buildings

Abstract: The integration of building information model (BIM) with point cloud from 3D laser scanner provides powerful assistance in a variety of applications in the life cycle of building. However, the adoption of BIM and 3D laser scanning for applications in the whole life cycle of buildings has yet to be satisfactorily reviewed. There is a need to understand the current situation of applications with BIM and 3D laser scanning and their combined methods. The authors summarized combined methods of BIM and 3D laser scan… Show more

“…The laser scanning method is primarily used in terrain surveying, architectural scanning, cultural relic protection, manufacturing, virtual reality, and other fields. Among them, the laser scanning method is a fundamental component of Building Information Modeling [35]. It can create 3D records and archives of engineering construction, providing a real data foundation for subsequent maintenance.…”

“…Recent research has explored the integration of laser scanning and BIM technologies for building projects [25] and proposed integrated laser scanning and BIM frameworks for various purposes in the construction industry [26,[38][39][40]. Studies on integrated data collection techniques and BIM highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance project management, reduce errors, and promote collaboration among stakeholders during construction processes.…”

“…Overall, SVD-vs-DI object instance detection is split into two categories based on 3D/2D data formats: PCD-vs-DI instance extraction and image-based instance extraction. As for the first category, PCD-vs-DI instance detection is comprised of three workflows (Liu et al, 2021) depending on the input data formats:…”
