A surface‐enhanced Raman sensor for trace identification and analysis of high‐priority drugs of abuse with portable and handheld Raman devices

Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a rapidly emerging technology that offers a fast, extremely sensitive, and quantitative approach to trace chemical detection. Such a technique incorporated into a portable device is attractive to law enforcement and emergency room personnel for rapid accurate on-site screening of illicit and abused drugs. Toward this, we are developing an analyzer in a hand-held unit, based on SERS that is integrated with a capillary sensor embedded with activated gold nanoparticle… Show more

“…The spectral identification and analysis software was developed in-house with python. The algorithm used here to match spectra stored in the library has been discussed in a previously published paper [17]. The estimated limit of detection (LOD) was calculated by a simple approach (following ICH guidelines) based on the signal-to-noise ratio of 3, where LOD = (C)/([S/N]/3), C is the concentration in parts-per-million (ppm) or parts-per-billion (ppb), S is the signal baselinecorrected peak intensity, N is root mean square (RMS) noise, and where the cut-off peak signal is assigned as three times the background-signal or blank [18].…”

“…In addition to spectra, a Raman band comparison table between the analytes with literature references was also provided for the information containing 39 drugs spanning the following drug classes: opioids, stimulants, sedatives, and other (Farquharson et al, 2019). Another use of an in‐house library can be found in T. Zhang et al (2022).…”

“…Various methods have been used to detect and determine MDA in different biofluids including fluorescence, 6 surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, 7 mass spectrometry, 8 capillary electrophoresis, 9 and the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) way. 10 However, some of these procedures are improper for on-the-spot detection because they require expensive tools and expertise.…”
