Through a systematic review of publications in reputed peer-reviewed journals, this paper investigates the role of blockchain technology in sustainable supply chain management. It uses the What, Who, Where, When, How, and Why (5W+1H) pattern to formulate research objectives and questions. The review considers publications since 2015, and it includes 187 papers published in 2017, 2018, 2019, and the early part of 2020, since no significant publications were found in the year 2015 or 2016 on this subject. It proposes a reusable classification framework—emerging technology literature classification level (ETLCL) framework—based on grounded theory and the technology readiness level for conducting literature reviews in various focus areas of an emerging technology. Subsequently, the study uses ETLCL to classify the literature on our focus area. The results show traceability and transparency as the key benefits of applying blockchain technology. They also indicate a heightened interest in blockchain-based information systems for sustainable supply chain management starting since 2017. This paper offers invaluable insights for managers and leaders who envision sustainability as an essential component of their business. The findings demonstrate the disruptive power and role of blockchain-based information systems. Given the relative novelty of the topic and its scattered literature, the paper helps practitioners examining its various aspects by directing them to the right information sources.

IGR Token-Raw Material and Ingredient Certification of Recipe Based Foods Using Smart Contracts

The use of smart contracts and blockchain tokens to implement a consumer trustworthy ingredient certification scheme for commingled foods, i.e., recipe based, food products is described. The proposed framework allows ingredients that carry any desired property (including social or environmental customer perceived value) to be certified by any certification authority, at the moment of harvest or extraction, using the IGR Ethereum token. The mechanism involves the transfer of tokens containing the internet url published at the authority’s web site from the farmer all along the supply chain to the final consumer at each transfer of custody of the ingredient using the Cricital Tracking Event/Key Data Elements (CTE/KDE) philosophy of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). This allows the end consumer to easily inspect and be assured of the origin of the ingredient by means of a mobile application. A successful code implementation of the framework was deployed, tested and is running as a beta version on the Ethereum live blockchain as the IGR token. The main contribution of the framework is the possibility to ensure the true origin of any instance or lot of ingredient within a recipe to the customer, without harming the food processor legitimate right to protect its recipes and suppliers.

Resumo Objetivos do estudo: O objetivo da pesquisa é identificar como o Blockchain pode contribuir com a Gestão da Cadeia de Suprimentos. Metodologia/abordagem: Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica com a aplicação de revisão sistemática da literatura na base de dados da CAPES, utilizando como chave de busca as palavras Supply Chain Management e Blockchain no título e no assunto, seguida de entrevistas com profissionais especialistas na área para a validação e complementação das características levantadas. Principais resultados: Inicialmente, foram identificados onze artigos que demonstraram diferentes formas de contribuição do Blockchain para a utilização em Gestão da Cadeia de Suprimentos, tendo como características mais relevantes o registro distribuído, a imutabilidade e o custo. Os especialistas adicionaram a eliminação de entidades de verificação, de disputas entre elos e redução de perdas. Contribuições acadêmicas: O trabalho apresenta exemplos de diferentes aplicações do Blockchain na Gestão da Cadeia de Suprimentos discutidas nos artigos selecionados, podendo servir de base para estudos para novas utilizações em diferentes áreas e setores. Contribuições práticas: O estudo demonstrou que o Blockchain pode contribuir de diferentes formas para as operações na Gestão da Cadeia de Suprimentos e, também, identificou barreiras a serem superadas para sua ampla operacionalização, como a necessidade de recursos computacionais robustos e regulamentações.
