Paper aims: This article investigates the worldwide trend of growth in the number of recalls, as well as in the number of products involved in each campaign. Originality:To investigate these facts, a study of the automotive recall was developed, comprising Brazil, the European Union, and the United States of America.Research method: Due to the different availabilities between the locations, search tools and software were developed to obtain and group hidden data from 2010 to 2019. Main findings:In this work, the impacts of the recall were analyzed using three categories of algorithms: clustering, classification, and regression. Analyzes were made about the results obtained and discussions were built about the importance of applying the machine learning technique. Implications for theory and practice:The use of search tools and software to obtain and group hidden data in databases and opens the opportunity for new research in various areas.

Failures during the product development process can lead to problems in product quality and reliability, which in turn can cause serious harm to its end-users. When such failures are discovered after a vehicle is already in usage, a safety recall is required, which can incur in potential damage and losses to brand image. Recall rates of multinational companies can be affected by regional law enforcement and quality requirements of local governments. Despite its importance for the safety of end-users, the automotive vehicle recall process in Brazil is little studied by the academy. The main objective of this project was to collect data and clarify how the automotive vehicle recall process is carried out in Brazil and how it could be improved by comparing it with Germany, a country with very advanced regulations in this sector and with a fleet of vehicles similar to that of Brazil. To achieve this goal, the work provided an overview of the available data in both countries, developed a scalable method for comparing recall rates and an analysis of recall rates of the main OEMs in operation. The work concludes using this data to draw insights on how these processes can be improved.

El estudio de la problemática de retiro de productos defectuosos del mercado (recalls) es un tema relevante para la gestión de la calidad y la gestión de cadenas de suministro. En este artículo se identifican los principales aportes, enfoques y metodologías propuestos en la literatura científica para tratar el tema de la recogida de productos defectuosos en el mercado, a través de un análisis bibliométrico y la clasificación taxonómica de los aportes realizados en los últimos 20 años. Para ello, se realizó una revisión de literatura en las bases de datos Taylor and Francis, EBSCO, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer Link, IEEE, Google Scholar y Proquest. El análisis bibliométrico permitió identificar los principales clústeres en relación con la problemática. La clasificación taxonómica permitió agrupar los aportes en seis categorías: tipo de aporte, enfoque de calidad, enfoque del problema, tipo de metodología, características de los datos y categoría de producto. Se evidenció que los sectores con mayor nivel de ocurrencia de retiros de productos son la industria de juguetes, el sector automotor, suministros eléctricos y la industria alimenticia.
