A study on the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in the chloroformic and methanolic extracts of 6 important medicinal plants collected from North of Iran

Abstract: Background: As possible sources of natural bioactive molecules, the plant essential oils and extracts have been used globally in new antimicrobial compounds, food preservatives, and alternatives to treat infectious disease. Methods: In this research, the antimicrobial activities of chloroformic and methanolic extracts of Sophora flavescens, Rhaponticum repens, Alhagi maurorum, Melia azedarach, Peganum harmala, and Juncus conglomeratus were evaluated against 8 bacteria (S. aureus, B. subtilis, R. toxicus, P. ae… Show more

“…All samples showed substantial concentrations of total phenolics, with M. hostilis , commercial mixture and the mixture of M. hostilis and B. caapi showing the highest concentrations, and P. harmala the lowest content of total phenolics. Recently, Hadadi et al [ 41 ], developed a study where determined the content of total phenols, using the same method, having also verified the presence of these compounds in extracts of P. harmala .…”

“…The study of antioxidant activity is useful to provide preliminary data in the development of natural materials to increase the feasibility of using plants as herbal medicines. Antioxidant activity can be determined from the IC50 value by the DPPH method (Hadadi et al, 2020).…”

“…Sophoraflavanone B ( 48 ) also caused cell wall weakening and consequently membrane damage had occurred, and intracellular constituents leaked from the cell as the proposed mechanism of its antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant- Staph. aureus (anti-MRSA) (Farhadi et al 2019 ; Hadadi et al 2020 ). An antibacterial synergism of compound ( 48 ) with antibiotics, including ampicillin, gentamicin, and oxacillin anti-MRSA, was previously determined (Farhadi et al 2019 ).…”
