A study on petroleum exploration potential of Barito Basin in southeastern Kalimantan, Indonesia: comparison of petroleum system with adjacent Kutai Basin

Abstract: The Kutai and Barito basins are the Cenozoic rift basins in southeastern Kalimantan, Indonesia and are very mature for hydrocarbon exploration history. Both basins have experienced similar structural evolution and depositional history. Despite the similarity between two basins, large oil and gas fields were found in the Kutai Basin, whereas not common in the Barito Basin and localized in its northeastern part. Depositional history of both basins evolved from lacustrine syn-rift to marine post-rift stages throu… Show more

“…Most, though not all, were located in the Barito Basin, on the western side of the Meratus Mountains. More recent studies have also examined the Tanjung Formation from the perspective of petroleum, structure or coalbed methane potential (Satyana et al, 2001;Heryanto, 2009;Simatupang and Amarullah, 2010;Won et al, 2018). Witts et al (2011Witts et al ( , 2012 presented by far the most detailed descriptions of the Tanjung Formation along exposed sections in the eastern side of the Barito Basin.…”
