A Study on Exfoliation of Expanded Graphite Stacks in Candelilla Wax

Abstract: A novel, green route for pre-exfoliation of graphite based on a biodegradable polymer and high-power ultrasound is presented. Candelilla wax (CW), derived from the leaves of the candelilla plant, has been used for the first time as a natural non aqueous medium to induce the pre-exfoliation of expanded graphite (EG) under ultrasonic irradiation in an economical way. The proposed method uses also D-limonene as a natural organic solvent for reducing viscosity and increasing the affinity between the polar groups o… Show more

“…0 and No. 3 in Table 5 [36]. Overall, it is to note that the ratio is always higher than one, and it is understood that the main species are the C-O-C and C-O-P bridge structures in comparison with the oxidized phosphate and carbonyl ones, whether the system without MMT or with it.…”

“…9a showed that the deconvoluted XPS spectra of the C1s peak discloses four peaks using binding energies of 284.60, 286.50, 287.80, and 288.50 eV, which can be attributed to C-C (single), CQC (double), CQO (carbonyl), and COOH (carboxylic acid) groups, respectively. 56 The C-C sp 2 bond intensity is more than double that of the CQC bond due to the availability of scratch on the aromatic basal carbon chain of BGO sheets. The CQO (carbonyl), and COOH (carboxyl) bonds showed lower to the lowest intensities compared to the C-C bonds due to the less reduction reaction occurring during the flame retardancy test.…”

“…During the last decade, the production of bioplastics has largely grown, with the aim of decreasing the negative impact of the synthetic polymers on the environment, since they can be bio-based and/or biodegradable [ 4 , 33 , 34 ]. However, they still represent a very small segment of the market.…”
