The shrimp industry, including its culture and feed sectors, exhibited steady growth over the years with a reduced cost–benefit ratio due to increasing production costs attributed mainly to enhanced feed costs. The unsustainable availability and rapid increase in fishmeal cost have forced the aquafeed sector to reduce dietary inclusion levels. The filamentous fungus, Aspergillus niger plays an important role in utilising plant protein sources for formulating cost‐effective shrimp feed. A. niger has been reported to produce numerous hydrolytic enzymes to degrade the limiting factors of plant proteins such as antinutrients and fibre fractions. This fungus enhanced not only the quantity but also the quality of proteins and amino acids, especially methionine and lysine. Likewise, it also increased the availability of soluble minerals, particularly phosphorous, by degrading the phytic‐phosphorus, thereby helping to replace dietary fishmeal up to 80% in penaeid shrimps. Consequently, this fungus could reduce feed formulation cost significantly. However, the mycotoxins produced by this fungus pose difficulties during large‐scale fermentation, and its implications on the workers and environment cast doubt about its efficacy and utility. However, recent developments indicate that A. niger could be an alternative choice in reducing the pressure on fishmeal demand by enhancing the nutrient utilization of plant‐based materials leading to the formulation of, cost‐effective feeds that can sustain shrimp culture and production in the future.

The selection of ingredients is an important aspect for diets formulation for fish in captivity. The use of fruit industry by-products can be an alternative for inclusion in diets for ornamental fish, as discus fish case, to improve health and reduction of production costs, further to reducing the environmental impacts of fruits industries residues. The objective the studies was to evaluate the bioavailability of fruit industry by-products in the diet for discus fish by coefficients of digestibility. The digestibility of three by-products: pineapple by-product, mango by-product, and passion fruit by-product were evaluated. Thirty-two discus fish (106 ± 26.6 g) were distributed in 4 tanks for feeding and fecal collection, constituting an experimental design in Latin square (4 diets test- x 4 periods of fecal collection x 4 replicates). The three by-products had digestibility coefficients above 80%, 70%, and 69% for dry matter, protein, and fat, respectively, being possible to use them as a source of these nutrients in diets for the discus fish. However, it was observed that the mango and passion fruit by-product had the lowest energy digestibility coefficient, with bioavailabilities less than 50% of utilization. The co-products of the fruit processing industry tested in this work have nutritional conditions to be used as food for root discs. The use of these co-products as food for ornamental fish can be an alternative use and value.

Low occurrence of Cryptosporidium canis in feces of dogs seroreactive for Leishmania spp.

In this study, we investigated the occurrence and characterized molecularly Cryptosporidium oocysts in feces of dogs seroreactive for Leishmania spp. We hypothesized that the clinical staging of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) influences the occurrence and intensity of Cryptosporidium spp. oocyst shedding in feces from the canine host due to the immunosuppression induced by Leishmania infantum. Fecal samples from 101 dogs with anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies detected by Dual-Path Platform (DPP®) immunochromatographic test (Biomanguinhos) and/or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Biomanguinhos) were concentrated by the centrifuge-sedimentation method in water-ethyl acetate. The sediments were submitted to the technique of negative staining with malachite green and observed under an optical microscope (400× magnification). The occurrence was 0.99% (95 confidence interval 0.00%- 2.93%). A single Cryptosporidium oocyst was found in one of the samples examined by microscopy, and the result was confirmed by nested-PCR. The amplicon sequence showed 100% genetic identity with Cryptosporidium canis. The dog presented the following clinical signs suggestive of CVL: cachexia, generalized alopecia, pale colored gingival mucosa, splenomegaly, and onychogryphosis. We conclude that there is no evidence that the oligosymptomatic and symptomatic clinical staging of dogs seroreactive for Leishmania spp. influenced the occurrence and intensity of C. canis oocyst shedding in the canine host.
