A Study of the Dehydration of Derivatives of Orthobenzoylbenzoic Acid

Abstract: Boron or silicon fluoride dissolved in an alcohol forms with mercuric oxide a catalyst for acetylene reactions much superior to sulfuric acid.2. Fluoboric and fluosilicic acids are probably the active constituents of these solutions, which have high electrical conductance and strong acid properties (Fig. 1).3. Boron fluoride dissolved in ether to form BF3(C2H5)20, b. p. 123°m ay also be used as a catalytic agent.4. The catalysts are effective in very small quantities. 5. Using these catalysts, ethylidene ether… Show more

“…Oxidation of 1 was accomplished by modifying a procedure reported for the oxidation of substituted 2-methylbenzophenones to afford diacid 6 (Scheme ). Attempts to perform an intramolecular Friedel−Crafts acylation of 6 in H 2 SO 4 did not yield any ring-closed product. Use of polyphosphoric acid gave low yields of regioisomeric anthraquinones 4 and 7 .…”
