Further preparative and kinetic studies are necessary before it can be decided whether N-halogen compounds (R-NHX) react via nitrenes or by a nucleophilic substitution mechanism. The same is true for the conversion with ferrous oxalate at about 300 "C of 0-nitrobiphenyl [72] or o-nitrobiphenylamine [73] into carbazole (58) and 9,lO-dihydrophenazine (59), respectively, and for the transformation of 2-(o-nitrophenyl)pyridine into ammonium nitreniate (60). The latter is also formed on thermal decomposition but not on exposure to ultraviolet radiation of 2-(o-azidophenyl)pyridine [74].

This chapter reviews methods for the generation of halocarbenes and the reaction of the latter with unsaturated substrates. Chemical transformations of the derived halocyclopropanes are discussed in sufficient detail to demonstrate the synthetic utility of this class. The formation of dihalocyclopropanes from dihalocarbenes was first accomplished in 1954 by Doering and Hoffmann who used chloroform t‐ butoxide to generate the dichlorocarbene. Since that time a variety of other methods have been developed for the generation of halocarbenes. The various methods are discussed.

nicht mehr restlos in Benzol, was durch Bildung hoherer Polymere [(PO)z(PPh),], (n > 2) zu erklaren ist. Das 1R-Spektrum von P404(PPh)6 stimmt niit dem von P4(PPh)6 uberein, mit dem Unterschied, daR zusatzlich eine P-0-Bande bei 8 p beobachtet wird. SchluDFaRt man die in den Abschnitten I bis V beschriebenen Ergebnisse zusammen, so kann man feststellen, daR der Phosphor gleich seinen beiden Nachbarn im Periodensystem, dern Silicium und Schwefel, hohergliedrige Ketten-und Ring-Molekule zu bilden verrnag. Die weitere Forschung auf diesem Gebiete verspricht daher eine reiche Ernte und wird sicherlich nicht nur zur SchlieRung systematischer Lucken, sondern auch zur Erweiterung unserer Vorstellungen vom Bindungs-und Reaktionsverhalten des Phosphors beitragen. lnsbesondere laBt sich aus den bisherigen Untersuchungen uber organosubstituierte Polyphosphane PnR, + die Hoffnung ableiten, daB a u k r dem bis heute allein bekannten Grundkorper P2H4 auch hohere geradkettige Polyphosphane PnHn + ?, wie P3H5 und P4H6, bei tieferer Temperatur isolierbar sein werden. Vielversprechende Hinweise hierfur finden sich bereits in der Literatur [27].
