BACKGROUND Anaemia is one of the most common conditions observed in the clinical practice. Various causative factors have been associated with anaemia. Association of hypothyroidism with anaemia has been studied and it was recognized that prevalence of anaemia is higher in hypothyroid patients compared to normal population. We wanted to identify the prevalence of anaemia in overt hypothyroid patients in our geographical region. METHODS This is a cross sectional study conducted at SVS Medical College, Mahbubnagar. All the clinically evident and laboratory confirmed hypothyroid cases during the study period of September 2018 to august 2019 were included. A total of 92 hypothyroid patients were included and were evaluated further for anaemia. Prevalence of anaemia and type of anaemia was studied, and appropriate statistical analysis was used. RESULTS Out of 92 hypothyroid patients evaluated, anaemia was found in 34 (36.95%). and females were predominantly affected when compared to males. Most common type of anaemia observed was normochromic and normocytic anaemia. (55.88%) anaemic cases were normocytic followed by microcytic (38.2%); whereas, very few cases were macrocytic (5.8%). The mean age of 39.2 was observed in females whereas in males the mean age was 41.3. None of the males have shown severe anaemia whereas majority of the females were having severe anaemia. CONCLUSIONS Hypothyroidism and anaemia are fairly common conditions observed in the clinical practice and also hypothyroidism is one of the factors for causation of anaemia. It is therefore mandatory to do a proper evaluation of thyroid patients.

Evaluation of anti anemic prospective of natural iron sources in lactating women- an ignored important segment of Pakistani population

Almost entire segment of expecting and breastfeeding mothers in Pakistan are severely affected by iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with predictable prevalence of 50% and as severe public health problem in lactating mothers, has worldwide pervasiveness. Commonly used synthetic iron sources provoke complications. Thus, food sources are preferred due to high bioavailability and sustainability. The present study was done on various natural and synthetic iron sources evaluated for proximate composition, mineral matter, sensory attributes and storage stability. The treatments were fed for 90 days and their efficacy was tested among anemic lactating women. The blood samples of 862 women were taken to examine their hemoglobin level and pertinent biomarkers. Hence, 37.00% volunteers were found to be anemic (Hb < 11 g/dL) and 67.71% women showed IDA problem. Finally, 200 volunteers were strewn arbitrarily into 4 groups. All treatments provided 50% RDA of iron. Dietary intakes and biochemical investigations of T 2 group showed momentous improvement (P < 0.05) while linear variations were recorded in anthropometrics, liver function tests (LFTs) and renal function tests (RFTs). Study revealed that food iron sources are easily accessible, cheaper, safe and has more bioavailable iron in skirmishing IDA among lactating women on sustained basis.

Background: According to WHO, highest incidence of anaemia is seen in Asia with about half of the anaemic women present in Indian subcontinent only. Various studies in the past have reported that iron deficiency hampers thyroid function. The thyroid hormones are essential for both foetal and maternal well-being. Our aim was to study anemia among pregnant women and its effect on thyroid profile. Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study 200 women were enrolled (100 anemic and 100 non anemic) and subsequent thyroid profile was done. Confounders like high risk pregnancy, chronic diseases like coronary heart disease, renal failure/insufficiency, liver disease, Astro-intestinal diseases, known cases hypothyroidism was excluded. The women were followed up till delivery. The data was be tabulated and analysed using Chi square test in case of qualitative data and student t test in case normally distributed quantitative data. Results: Four percentages of pregnant women had overt hypothyroidism in anemic group as compared to 3% in non-anemic group. 35% in anemic group had sub-clinical hypothyroidism as compared to 16% in non-anemic group and the difference was statistically significant. The comparison of TSH values in anemic and non anemic women was statistically significant (p=0.002). There was no association found with severity of anemia with TSH, ft3, ft4 values. Conclusions: The present study found a significant association between anemia and hypothyroidism. However thyroid dysfunction was not associated with the severity of anemia. Further studies are warranted to directly identify the causal relationship between the two.
