A study of Guanabara Bay sedimentation rates

Abstract: Sedimentation rates in Guanabara Bay were determined by applying the 210pb CRS method to sediment cores collected at five different stations. The results showed a pronounced increase from 0.14).2 cm.year 1 to 1 2 cm.year 1, in sedimentation rate, over the last 40 50 years. Observed heavy metal profiles in sediment could also be explained on the basis 210pb dating and local industrial history.

“…This rate is comparable to that found in some recent sedimentary environments in Brazilian coast, such as Guanabara Bay (1.6 ± 0.6 cm y −1 ). 32 On the other hand, rates as high as those found below 42.5 cm depth in the present study are less frequent in the literature, as reported for the northeastern region of Sepetiba Bay/Brazil (up to 6 cm y −1 ). 33 High sediment deposition rates could reflect both anthropogenic activities and storm events or other high flow periods.…”

“…A list of chemical properties of the radionuclide 210 Pb and of its parent in decay series of 238 U favors its use in the application in recent sediment cycles. 2 It has been successfully used in lakes [3][4][5][6][7] estuaries, [7][8][9][10][11][12] inner continental plataforms [13][14][15] and mangrove ecosystems. 15-19 210 Pb geochronologies are especially significant when confirmed by anthropogenic signatures in sediment profiles.…”
