Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of agile manufacturing practices on business performance of Indian medium and large-scale manufacturing industry. Design/methodology/approach A survey questionnaire was designed to attain the research objectives. Agile manufacturing questionnaire was sent to around 500 randomly selected manufacturing organizations in the northern spectrum of India through e-mails and posts, out of which 154 usable responses have been received. This study investigates the inter-relationships between various agile manufacturing implementation practices and business performance measures using various statistical techniques. This paper deploys Games–Howell hoc test to establish the statistical significance of business performance improvements, progressively accrued over a reasonable period of time, through holistic agile manufacturing implementation. Findings The paper validates the contribution of agile manufacturing toward realization of the significant improvements in various business performance measures such as customer-related achievements, financial achievements, business-related achievements, operational achievements, employee-related achievements, and supplier-related achievements. Further, the discriminant validity test has been used in this paper for classifying highly successful and moderately successful organizations. Research limitations/implications The paper only concentrated on manufacturing organizations in northern India. The results of this paper cannot generalize across all the sectors and spectrum of Indian manufacturing organizations. Originality/value This paper develops an insight into the strong potential of agile manufacturing implementation practices in affecting business performance measures.

Purpose Agility is the ability of an organization to adjust its supply chain tactics and operations to respond quickly against altering business environments such as fluctuating demand pattern, supply chain disruption and global competition. An agile organization must possess a promising capability of swiftly responding to dynamic conditions while being cost-effective without compromising the efficiency. Such high-performance adaptability necessitates the role of supply chain managers to maximize the agility of the supply chain through the efficient use of input resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study to reveal a new decision support tool that would allow the key decision-makers to maximize the agility of the supply chain while deploying the input resources more effectively. Design/methodology/approach In present study, an integrated approach of popular analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and goal programming (GP) has been adopted as a potential solution methodology. AHP has been implemented to allocate the local and global weights to decision variables, whereas GP incorporates the AHP weights into the desired model. Findings It was found that the proposed decision support tool restricts the value of the decision variables for maximizing the agility and optimizing the usage of input resources. The results obtained from the model validate the objective of achieving targeted agility level within the available resource limitations. Research limitations/implications The decision support tool developed in the proposed study offers a systematic and effectively simple approach to supply chain managers with a goal of identifying the degree of focus under each decision variable in the respective manufacturing organizations. Originality/value A novel decision support tool has been developed known as an agility control system), which helps the decision-maker to achieve the required agility in the supply chain by controlling the decision variables.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) offers tremendous advantages to multidisciplinary teams from a coordination standpoint throughout the project lifecycle. That said, there are potential pitfalls with the use of BIM if coordination and communication between the disciplines is not properly managed, resulting in rework and inefficiencies in delivery. Agile project management techniques, widely adopted within the software industry to allow incremental development of products, have great potential for application to BIM model development throughout the project lifecycle. These techniques focus on simple and regular communication between core project members and stakeholders, regular priority identification to set the goals for the next phase ("Sprint") and incremental product development. Applied to BIM model development, these techniques provide a framework for multidisciplinary coordination and interface management and reduce redesign and abortive effort from miscommunication and poor task sequencing. This paper presents two case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. In the first, an Architectural BIM model was created at schematic design and these techniques were used to guide the development of the design and the associated BIM model. In the second, a BIM model was created during the operational phase of a building to consolidate the data from a variety of facilities management and operations systems (maintenance, asset management, health and safety, sustainability and space planning). In each, the various stakeholders are consulted to set priorities for model development, which are incrementally implemented. These case studies demonstrate the benefits of using an Agile approach to BIM and inform the framework presented in this paper.
