High-performance ceramic-lined composite steel pipes (CLCSPs) were fabricated by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and centrifugal casting technique. ZrO 2 powders doped by 3 mol% Y 2 O 3 were added into Al-Fe 2 O 3 thermit to improve the mechanical properties of CLCSPs. The phase constituents and microstructural evolution of ceramic layers after addition of ZrO 2 were analyzed by means of X-ray diffractometer, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. The effects of ZrO 2 on fracture toughness of ceramic layers, and crushing strength as well as mechanical shock of CLCSPs were investigated using Vickers indentation microfracture method, squeezing test and repetitive impacting method. The results show that addition of ZrO 2 changes the morphology and preferential orientation of Al 2 O 3 dendrites, and reduces the width of Al 2 O 3 dendrites, leading to the microstructure of Al 2 O 3 dendrites with ne t-ZrO 2 phase particles distributed at boundaries. The hardness of ceramic layer decreases, while the crushing strength of CLCSP changes slightly after addition of ZrO 2 . The fracture toughness of ceramic layer is signi cantly enhanced; meanwhile the mechanical shock resistance of CLCSPs was also greatly improved by adding more than 2% ZrO 2 . Produced ceramic-lined steel pipe using the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method has found uses in many applications. A SHScentrifugal machine was designed to produce a ceramic-lined steel pipe from ferric oxide and aluminum powder (thermite mixture) under high centrifugal acceleration. The obtained products are expected to be Al 2 O 3 ceramic in the innermost layer and a Fe layer in a region between the outer steel pipes. In the present work, specific regions of a pipe was particularly observed to investigate the stuck (dead) spaces at the pipe head because of its importance in further processes (joining, welding, etc.) which may affect the quality of the next operations. In this article, the product's composition, phase separation, microhardness, and surface finish were studied on three zones of the pipe.

A ceramic-lined steel pipe has been prepared by the thermit reaction of aluminum-ferric oxide under centrifugal force with the partial replacement of aluminum by the silicon sludge obtained from a semiconductor wafer cutting processing. The ceramic layer on the pipe inner surface consists of the crystalline structures of mainly corundum (-Al 2 O 3 ) and hercynite (FeAl 2 O 4 ). The sludge replacement increases the layer density from 2.9 g/cm 3 to 3.5 g/cm 3 and the hardness from 1450 Hv to 1780 Hv. The amorphous phases of mullite (Al 6 Si 2 O 13 ) formed between the crystalline structures are found to be responsible for a significant improvement of the ceramic layer density.
