A Stochastic Computational Framework to Investigate the Initial Stage of Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete Superstructures

Abstract: This article presents a stochastic computational framework to investigate the chloride‐induced corrosion of reinforced concrete superstructures. For this purpose, three‐dimensional finite‐element models are developed to determine the extent of chloride penetration into the superstructure components. One of the unique capabilities of this framework is to simultaneously consider all the major factors that affect the corrosion process. Furthermore, the developed framework integrates various sources of uncertainty… Show more

“…In contrast to the wide applications of the expensive structural health monitoring (SHM) system to river/sea‐crossing long‐span bridges, the application of the SHM technology to short/middle‐span bridges are much fewer due to their limited maintenance budgets (Hampshire and Adeli, ; Jiang and Adeli, ; Adeli and Jiang, ; Jiang and Adeli, ; Park et al., 2007; Jiang et al., ; Carden and Brownjohn, ; Adeli and Jiang, ; Talebinejad et al., ; Gangone et al., ; Adewuyi and Wu, ; Hazra et al., ; Sirca and Adeli ; Hu et al., ; Lee et al., ; Shafei et al., ; Zhang et al., ). Static load test is an important experiment tool for evaluating the load carrying capacity of short/middle‐span bridges.…”

“…Tai apsunkina teorinių modelių kūrimą bei siaurina jų adekvataus taikymo ribas; neįmanoma tiksliai nustatyti (išreikšti) tam tikros reakcijos tikimybės. Dauguma atliktų tyrimų (Tuutti 1982, Liu & Shi 2012, Pan & Lu 2012, Shafei et al 2013 skirti eksploatacijos trukmės stochastiniam modeliavimui, susijusiam su ilgalaikiais (daugiausia korozijos sukeltais) poveikiais. Šiame disertaciniame darbe stochastiniai metodai taikomi trumpalaike apkrova paveiktų armuoto betono elementų deformacijoms nustatyti.…”

“…While Gaussian stochastic fields have been widely used in different engineering applications, the evaluation of the parameters involved in the corrosion process indicates that a Gaussian field is not necessarily the best choice [36]. Some of the influential parameters can never become negative and the others exhibit highly non-Gaussian characteristics.…”
