This paper describes two experiments. In each experiment, 1-day-old specific pathogen free chicks were divided into three groups. In Experiment 1*[avian metapneumo virus (aMPV) challenge]*one group served as unvaccinated controls; the second group was vaccinated with live aMPV (subtype B) vaccine only, and the third group received the aMPV vaccine in combination with live Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine (VG/GA strain). Oropharyngeal swabs, tissues and blood samples were collected before and after challenge with a virulent subtype aMPV at 21 days post vaccination. Chicks were monitored for postchallenge clinical signs. Swabs and tissues were examined for the detection of challenge aMPV by virus isolation and by reverse-transcriptase polymerase-chain reaction. Sera were assayed for antibodies against aMPV and NDV. The single and combined vaccinated chicks were all protected against clinical signs and no challenge virus was isolated from either of the vaccinated-challenged groups. In Experiment 2 (NDV challenge), as in Experiment 1, chicks were divided into three groups where one group remained as unvaccinated control and the other two groups were vaccinated as above, except that the second group received live NDV vaccine only, instead of aMPV. At 21 days post vaccination, 15 chicks from each of the three groups were removed to a different site and challenged with a virulent NDV (Texas GB strain). Reisolation of the challenge virus was not attempted. All chicks in both NDV-vaccinated challenged groups were protected against clinical signs and mortality. These results show that, based on parameters monitored for the respective challenge virus, simultaneous application of live aMPV and NDV vaccines did not affect the efficacy of either vaccine.

SUMMARYThe Australian, heat-resistant, a virulent V4 strain of Newcastle disease (ND) virus was selected for further heat resistance to give a variant designated V4-UPM. V4-UPM was sprayed on to food pellets which were fed to chickens in amounts calculated to give about 10 6 EID 50 per chicken. Chickens vaccinated only once by feeding developed no haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies and were not protected against challenge with a viscerotropic velogenic strain of ND virus.Chickens given food pellet vaccine at 3 and 6 weeks of age developed HI antibodies and were substantially protected against parenteral and contact challenge with virulent ND virus. Similar protection was achieved when the V4-UPM vaccine was given intranasally on two occasions or when the vaccine virus was allowed to spread by contact from intranasally vaccinated chickens to nonvaccinated chickens. Heat resistant ND vaccine incorporated in food pellets may provide a method for protecting village chickens against ND in tropical countries.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of esterified glucomannan (E-GM) on performance, immunity, blood haematological and serum biochemical parameters in broilers exposed to diets naturally contaminated with mycotoxins. A total of 630 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to 9 treatments and 5 replicates of 14 chicks based on factorial (3 × 3) arrangement in completely randomized design. The dietary treatments included 3 levels of substituting naturally contaminated corn (0%, 50% and 100%), three levels of E-GM (0%, 0.05% and 0.1%) and their interaction. Body weight gains (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated from 7 to 49 days of age. Haematology, serum biochemical and enzyme activities were assessed. Antibody titre against Newcastle disease virus and infectious bursal disease was measured to evaluate the humoral immunity. In comparison to diets with no contamination, 50% and 100% naturally contaminated corn significantly decreased FI, BWG and FCR (P < .05). Supplementing 0.05% and 0.1% E-GM considerably improved the decreased BWG and FI (P < .05). However, only 0.1% binder ameliorated the negative impact of mycotoxins on FCR (P < .05). Replacement of contaminated corn remarkably diminished humoral immunity of chickens and increased liver enzyme activities which ameliorated by supplementing 0.05% and 0.1% of binder inclusion (P < .05). Results indicated that supplementing E-GM particularly at 0.1% level efficiently reversed the adverse effects of mycotoxins on broiler chickens. ARTICLE HISTORY
