A spatial power limiter using a nonlinear frequency selective surface

Abstract: A novel spatial power limiter based on nonlinear frequency selective surface (FSS) is presented for high power electromagnetic (HPEM) wave protection. Embedded with Schottky diodes, the nonlinear FSS not only reflects out‐of‐band electromagnetic incidence like a filter, but also exhibits a power‐limiting characteristic, allowing low‐loss transmission for an in‐band low‐power incidence while rejecting a high‐power one. Such a FSS with 4 × 4 unit cells is designed, fabricated and measured. Results demonstrate it… Show more

“…On the basis of FSS, Yang Cheng et al first reported the energy selective surface (ESS), which looks like a limiter, with pin-diode for EMP protection which only sensitive to the power density or field intensity of incident wave [9]. Subsequently, a spatial power limiter using a nonlinear FSS was researched combining the frequency selection characteristics of FSS and the energy selection characteristics of ESS [10,11]. However, as planar structures, the aforementioned structures should be fabricated at the front end of antenna to defend HPM and HPEM threats, just like a radome, which takes a lot of space and will inevitably affect the antenna pattern.…”

“…An FSS consisted of PIN diodes and metal grid was designed for the limiting of linear polarized wave [5]. To realize polarization independence, several symmetric FSSs were reported [69]. The comparison of different self-actuated FSSs is shown in Table 1.…”
