A solution for provisioning reliable M2M infrastructures using SDN and device management

Abstract: The current trend of running software components on top of virtual machines in cloud platforms is gaining more momentum as it reduces the deployment time and operational costs in comparison to running them on dedicated hardware. By providing elasticity through orchestration, this approach brings even more value taking advantage of the resources on peak times and saving energy when the load is not significant. However, such an approach brings some challenges due to the dynamic instantiation of new service compo… Show more

“…It defines device management procedures between a LWM2M server and a LWM2M client, which is located in a device. The protocol is used to create device management solutions that apply the approach of software defined networks [9,10]. The proposed solutions based on LWM2M consider high level architectural aspects and do not provide details on behavioral models that follow the M2M device management procedures.…”

“…The processing is then uniform for each of the management objects when it comes to parsing, storing, updating information related to the management objects. The LWM2M client-server interaction is done using the underlying data transfer protocol over CoAP/UDP, which decreases the message's overhead and improves eciency [176]. The DM message's exchange is based on RESTful operations on resources bound to the devices by follow- requests to corresponding capabilities in the platform, in addition to routing requests between applications connected to the same domain.…”

“…In the course of the research for this dissertation, several related publications have been disseminated that present the work within the topic of interest: eight conference papers reecting the main contributions ( [42,43,5,32,45,46,40,39]), one book chapter ( [190]) and six conference papers about related elds of application in the context of Smart City services ( [24,31,35,29,38,176]), and seven joint papers with other research projects members ( [191,136,36,37,43,44,192] open research issues to be addressed for the realization of this device-tier interaction [194]. However, it shall bring signicant improvements in developing emergency applications and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication.…”
