A social‐cognitive framework of small accommodation enterprise sustainability practices

Abstract: Small accommodation enterprises have a great potential to assist the tourism industry in the progress toward sustainable development goals. This study explores the inherent complexity of sustainability practices with the recognition that sustainable behavior is the outcome of a reciprocal determinism between personal, environmental, and behavioral factors. Unlike previous studies, the role of knowledge of sustainability as a major determinant of self‐efficacy is investigated to understand whether differences i… Show more

“…Satisfaction had four items and was measured on a 5-point Likert-type scale (1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neither Agree nor disagree, 4 = Agree, and 5 = Strongly agree). For example, respondents evaluated statements such as “I am sure it was the right thing to participate in the online study course this semester” and “I am satisfied with the decision to study online.” The third section examined respondents’ sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age, level of education, and nationality ( Otoo, Agyeiwaah, Dayour, & Wireko-Gyebi, 2016 ; Agyeiwaah, 2020 ). Following clear design and measurement, data collection procedures were followed.…”

“…Despite its wide application in sustainable consumption and production research (Agyeiwaah, 2020a; Lee, 2014; Phipps et al, 2013), the use of SCT to explain food waste behavior in relation to other environmental and personal factors remains scant, with only a few studies in tourism and hospitality that have actually applied this theory (Ding, 2022). The SCT states that even though the level of engagement of individuals with the environment varies due to differences in personal beliefs and goals, sustainability practices and behaviors are influenced by a complex set of internal and external factors (Sampaio et al, 2012).…”

“…There have been calls for the use of real-world data and settings to enhance the generalizability of findings (Dhir et al, 2020). Second, enterprises need professional knowledge for sustainability due to its complexity (Agyeiwaah, 2020a). However, previous studies have focused on the effects of specific variables associated with business interventions.…”

“…In SCT, self-efficacy is considered to be the chief motivation for behavior as well as the mediating factor and basic requirement of behavioral change (Bagherniya et al, 2018). SCT has been adopted in numerous studies as a conceptual framework for explaining various human phenomena, including decision-making and goal-setting (Mccormick and Martinko, 2004) and has recently been used to explain the motivation for entrepreneurship and practices of sustainability in STEs (Wang et al, 2019a, b;Agyeiwaah, 2020). For example, Bacq et al (2016) have demonstrated, based on SCT, the influence of the interaction between cognitive factors (i.e.…”
