A Snapshot of Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery Research in Canada

Abstract: The minimally- or non-invasive delivery of therapeutic agents through the skin has several advantages compared to other delivery routes and plays an important role in medical care routines. The development and refinement of new technologies is leading to a drastic expansion of the arsenal of drugs that can benefit from this delivery strategy and is further intensifying its impact in medicine. Within Canada, as well, a few research groups have worked on the development of state-of-the-art transdermal delivery t… Show more

“…These observations are considered as a support of the hypothesis that the increased permeability of PDMS films is attributed to the unique pore shape created by PEG or PG within the PDMS film. 2 Higuchi dissolution constant at steady state flux (ks), estimated time (ts) of steady state and determination coefficient (R 2 ), 3 PEG values of the calculated fit to the Equation (1), when steady state flux was achieved. Numbers were bolded for better data comparison.…”

“…It regards with the encapsulation of the therapeutic protein in multilayered, lipid-based submicronvesicles (Altum_Pharmaceuticals_Inc. ;Roohnikan et al, 2019). These vesicles have complex structures that include a variety of compartments into which drug molecules can be integrated, and the emulsion is completed with other excipients typical of a topic formulation.…”

“…The transdermal therapy has the potential to bypass the first pass metabolism, as well as decreases gastrointestinal side effects and, thereby, improve the safety and patient adherence. However, the transdermal delivery systems are not suitable for drugs with large molecular weight or which causes skin sensitization or irritation [24]. In general, the physicochemical properties of drug molecules, including aqueous solubility (>1 mg/mL), molecular size (<500 Daltons), lipophilicity (log P of 1–3), melting point (<200 °C), and dose (<25 mg/day) are considered, while developing transdermal drug delivery systems [25].…”
