A Smart Oro-Soft Palate Mucosal Drug Delivery: Credentials and Future Trends

Abstract: Over the last few decades pharmaceutical scientists throughout the world are trying to explore transdermal and transmucosal routes as an alternative to injections. The main impediment for the oral delivery of the drugs as potential therapeutic agents is their extensive pre-systemic metabolism, instability in acidic environment associated with inadequate and erratic oral absorption. The parenteral route is the only established route that overcomes all the drawbacks related with the orally inefficient drugs. How… Show more

“…It has become a favorable site for therapeutic application in the treatment of diseases of the oral cavity ( Verma et al, 2014 ). Oral transmucosal drug delivery is a systemic drug delivery approach that has various advantages over parenteral and oral delivery system ( Umashankar, 2015 ). A stratified squamous epithelium forms the outermost layer of the oral mucosa, which is followed by a basement membrane, a laminar propria, and lastly a submucosa as the innermost layer.…”
