A simulation to model position encoding multicrystal PET detectors

Abstract: We have developed a simulation to model position encoding multicrystal detectors for positron emission tomography. The simulation is designed to treat the interactions of energetic photons in a scintillator, the geometry of the multicrystal array, as well as the propagation and detection of individual scintillation photons. The simulation is tested with a model of the EXACT HR PLUS block detector manufactured by Siemens-CTI. Position and energy responses derived from the simulation are compared to measured one… Show more

“…Particle interactions are simulated with the GEANT 4 package (Agostinelli 2003) developed at CERN for high energy physics experiments. We use the Detect2000 code (Knoll et al 1988;Tsang et al 1995) to simulate the photon transport inside the scintillators and to the detectors. The GEANT 4 simulations include the low-energy electromagnetic processes package GLECS (Kippen 2004) for the simulations of low-energy interactions.…”

“…Both computational simulations and experimental measurements were used to evaluate the scintillator pixelation effects on spatial resolution. DETECT97, a Monte Carlo simulation software, was used for simulations of light transport in scintillation crystal (Tsang et al, 1995). Input geometries of both non-pixelated and pixelated scintillators are shown in Fig.…”
