A simplified method for fault detection and identification of mismatch modules and strings in a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system

Abstract: The foremost problem facing by the photovoltaic (PV) system is to identify the faults and partial shade conditions. Further, the power loss can be avoided by knowing the number of faulty modules and strings. Hence, to attend these problems, a new method is proposed to differentiate the faults and partially shaded conditions along with the number of mismatch modules and strings for a dynamic change in irradiation. The proposed method has developed in two main steps based on a simple observation from the Current… Show more

“…However, it is necessary to set a uniform line in the analysis, and the use of impedance method can effectively reduce the cost. is fault detection method is more applicable to simple circuits, but not too complex circuits [4]. Kim et al pointed out that the problem of cable fault location can be realized by a wavelet algorithm.…”

“…Different equipment shows obvious differences in appearance and state 3 . In the inspection of these electrical equipment, in addition to the traditional manual inspection methods, we can also rely on artificial intelligence technology and big data technology to build intelligent inspection robots, and realize the recognition of image information through image recognition technology 4 . With the development and progress of substation inspection robot technology, substation operation and maintenance business has gradually changed from traditional manual to intelligent and autonomous inspection robot 5 .…”

“…The PV generators are prone to faults on the generation side, so-called direct current (DC), and on-grid integration side, so-called alternating current (AC), connected through an inverter. The nature of faults frequently reported on the DC side include mismatch [4], interconnection and connection [5], earth [6], arc [7], line to line [8], bypass diode [9], short circuit (SC) and open circuit (OC) [10], maximum power point tracking (MPPT) [11], and degradation [12]. The rate of fault occurrences increases as the panels degrade over time, reaching up to 0.8% per year in the worst case [13].…”
