BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in hospitalized surgical patients. The occurrence of the disease is related to presence of risk factors, which are related primarily to trauma, venous stasis and hyper-coagulability. DVT seems not to be taken seriously by many surgeons in Nigeria. This is despite comprehensive studies that show no real differences in racial demography of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the importance of physician awareness about DVT especially its risks and prevention methods. METHODS: A detailed literature search was completed to extrapolate articles that described DVT risks and prevention. This involved hand and online searches. Specific search terms used included DVT/risk factors/prevention. The searches generated 468 papers. Of these 57 papers were included in the review. RESULTS

ПРАКТИКА ВВЕДЕНИЕВенозные тромбоэмболические осложнения (ВТЭО) являются частыми осложнениями в клиниче-ской практике. По разным оценкам, риск ВТЭО может достигать 30%, а у отдельных категорий пациентов -80% при отсутствии адекватной тромбопрофилакти-ки. Широко распространены и хронические заболе-вания вен, что сравнивается иногда с пандемией.Для профилактики ВТЭО и лечения симптомов хронических заболеваний вен нижних конечностей (ХЗВ) используются различные методы и средства. Из них к механическим средствам профилактики и лечения относятся: компрессионный трикотаж, аппаратный пневмомассаж, электронейромиостиму-ляция мышечно-венозной помпы голени. Из всего многообразного арсенала профилактических и лечебных средств именно механические способы получили наиболее широкое распространение бла-годаря своей универсальности, безопасности и про-стоте применения. Обширная доказательная база свидетельствует о хорошей эффективности и доступ-ности такого лечения. ПРОФИЛАКТИКА ВЕНОЗНЫХ ТРОМБОЭМБОЛИЧЕСКИХ ОСЛОЖНЕНИЙМеханические способы тромбопрофилактики Компрессионный трикотаж Несмотря на широчайшее распространение, практи-чески всеобщее признание эффективности градуирован-ной компрессии для профилактики ВТЭО в периопераци-онном периоде, точный механизм действия компресси-онного трикотажа остается не совсем понятным. В соот-ветствии с классическими представлениями, которые впервые были сформулированы в середине 20 в., счита-ется, что компрессионный трикотаж оказывает свое дей-ствие путем сжатия как поверхностных, так и глубоких сегментов венозного русла, тем самым увеличивая ско-рость венозного оттока, а также повышая эффективность работы венозных клапанов [1, 2].В ряде работ, в которых подробно изучалось профи-лактическое действие градуированной компрессии в отношении венозного тромбоза, было установлено, что использование компрессионного трикотажа приводит к изменению в биохимических показателях крови, в част-ности, происходят существенные изменения в показате-
