A simple surface treatment and characterization of AA 6061 aluminum alloy surface for adhesive bonding applications

Abstract: Structural adhesive bonding of aluminum is widely used in aircraft and automotive industries. It has been widely noted that surface preparation of aluminum surfaces prior to adhesive bonding plays a significant role in improving the strength of the adhesive bond. Surface cleanliness, surface roughness, surface wettability and surface chemistry are controlled primarily by proper surface treatment methods. In this study, we have employed a very simple technique influencing all these criteria by simply immersing … Show more

“…Both the adherend joints showed an increase in shear strength with an increase in surface roughness and then decrement in strength. These results are in agreement with previous research (Tezcan et al,2003;Pereira et al, 2012;Saleema et al, 2012).…”

“…This plane permits to analyse the main factor, the two and three-factor interactions without any confounding. On the basis of background experience on other materials and various references [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][19][20][21], the following control factors were adopted: the gas (Gas), the power (P) and the treatment time (Tt). For each treatment, four replications were carried out.…”

“…While the effectiveness of plasma treatments on the adhesive bonding of aluminium were proved in [12,[18][19][20][21]. On the other hand, despite laser cleaning treatments are an emerging technology, there are many study that demonstrate the effectiveness of this treatment in the cleaning of surfaces and/or in joint preparation [22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…4. in adhesive properties appears to be normal if failure can occur along the interface and within the adhesive joint [41]. The scatter can be reduced if a strong bonding between the metal substrate and adhesive joint can be achieved, and if the aramid fiber length is relatively small in comparison to the specimen width, for example, in a real structure.…”
