A simple ear splint for microtia patients

Abstract: Microtia is a congenital anomaly of the ear can occur as an isolated birth defect or as part of a spectrum of anomalies or as a syndrome. Microtia is often associated with impaired hearing and or total loss of hearing. Such patients typically require treatment for surgical ear reconstruction and for hearing impairment. Maintenance of ear projection and post auricular sulcus in staged ear reconstruction in microtia is a trying problem. So also is the maintenance of the patency of the external auditory meatus fo… Show more

“…As the lifted skin is prone to attach back to the incision, compromising the esthetics, projection geometry, and possibly the skin tone around the incision and attachment, a modified approach has been followed at our center [Figures 1 - 13 ]. [ 9 ] Depth of helical sulcus was excluded because of potential immediate or latter correction. The details thus collected were tabulated and results discussed.…”

“…Numerous splints have been described for maintaining the retroauricular space after ear framework elevation in microtia surgery. 2 These range from simple conventional dental moulds, 1 acrylic based resins, 2 silicon Foleys catheter, 3 and thermoplastic materials, to dressing techniques 4 and spectacle frames. 5 These have limited application owing to scarce availability, difficult compliance, cost, and the necessity to replace daily under supervision.…”

“…1 Preservation of cephaloauricular sulcus from obliteration following graft contracture is a challenge. 2 An effective splint should maintain the necessary auricular projection. Essentially, it should be self-retaining over a period of time.…”

“…Congenital anomaly of the external ear may be termed as “microtia.” It includes a spectrum of deformities from a grossly normal but small ear to the absence of the entire external ear. These deformities account for three in every 10,000 births, with bilaterally missing ears seen in fewer than 10% of all cases [ 1 3 ]. The patient presented in this article had a unilateral acquired missing ear due to burn deformity.…”
