A Second Act in Rural Migration in Western Pará: Rural Out-Migration and the Legacy of Amazon Colonization

Show more

“…Communities vary in institutions, political dynamics, and environmental conditions that differentiate livelihood patterns. These factors have been studied amply as they affect agricultural livelihoods and natural resource use (Agrawal and Chhatre 2006; Nagendra, Pareeth, and Ghate 2006), but their impacts on migration have received less attention (but see Massey, Goldring, and Durand 1994; Richards and VanWey 2015). While we include community‐level travel cost and household population density in analyses, these human‐ecological factors do not fully encompass the community processes that shape labor allocation decisions.…”

“…Given the strong influence of contextual factors (e.g. governmental and market incentives, local economy, and institutional arrangements) in the process of decision-making for land-use change and livelihoods (Deadman et al 2004;Margulis 2004;Richards and VanWey 2015;VanWey et al 2007), the issues of rural development in parallel with forest conservation could not be thought without reinforce such factors. Aubertin (2015) argued that positive effects of Amazon forest conservation in the past were due to the major government's efforts.…”
