AGRAPES‐based mesoscale ensemble prediction system for tropical cyclone forecasting: configuration and performance

Abstract: To improve short-range tropical cyclone (TC) forecasting in China from both deterministic and probabilistic standpoints, a mesoscale ensemble prediction system (TREPS) based on the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System (GRAPES) is constructed as a planned operational system. TREPS comprises one unperturbed and 30 perturbed forecasts ranging up to 60 h at 0.09 • horizontal resolution. Downscaling perturbations from the European Centre for Medium-range Forecasts' (ECMWF) ensemble prediction system (… Show more

“…The terrain‐following, height‐based vertical coordinate is used with a Charney–Philips vertical grid in which the momentum and thermodynamic variables are staggered (Zhang et al ., 2020). The Medium‐Range Forecast (MRF) planetary boundary‐layer scheme (Hong and Pan, 1996), simplified Arakawa–Schubert (SAS) cumulus parameterisation scheme (Pan and Wu, 1995; Han and Pan, 2011), Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) single‐moment 6‐class (WSM6) microphysics scheme (Hong and Lim, 2006), five‐layer thermal diffusion (SLAB) land surface model (Dudhia, 1996), Dudhia short‐wave radiation (SWRAD) scheme (Dudhia, 1989) and rapid radiative transfer (RRTM) long‐wave radiation scheme (Mlawer et al ., 1997) are used in TRAMS (Zhang, 2018). The model covers the area within 81.6–160.8° E and 0.8–50.5° N.…”

“…A horizontal grid designed on a longitude-latitude mesh is employed with the Arakawa-C grid in which the meridional and zonal wind components are staggered. “…To investigate the advantages of GM‐CPEPS in QPFs, its deterministic guidance is directly compared with DET, and its probabilistic guidance is compared with the binary rainfall fields of DET following Zhang () (hereinafter Z18). Specifically, DET was transformed into binary fields by setting grid points exceeding a certain threshold to a value of 1, while all other points were given a value of 0.…”

“…Recently, the multiscale characteristics of forecast perturbations of different IC perturbation methods have been illustrated in studies for both mesoscale regional ensembles (Wang et al ., 2014; Zhang et al ., 2015; Zhang, 2018a) and CPEPSs (Caron, 2013; Johnson et al ., 2014; Harnisch and Keil, 2015; Tennant, 2015; Johnson and Wang, 2016; Raynaud and Bouttier, 2016; Schwartz et al ., 2020). However, such an issue has not been investigated in either Z18 or Z19.…”
